Vintage 1960s Knit Dress & Bolero #115


A wonderful ensemble for a summer wardrobe—the tiny bolero covers a dress with a V-nick, cap-sleeves and a slightly flared skirt.  The pattern is a subtle ribbed design which makes up lovely in this white-on-white outfit.

INSTRUCTIONS are for a 32 inch bust. 
Changes for 34, 36 and 38 inch sizes are given in brackets. 

Instructions for blouse the skirt are given separately, with directions added for making a one-piece dress.

MATERIALS:  
7 [8, 8, 9] oz of Patons Beehive bouclé for bodice, 15 [16, 17, 18] oz for skirt and 9 [9, 10, 10] oz for bolero
1 pair needles size 12                   
1 medium crochet hook
1 yard of 1/2 inch elastic

GAUGE: 
17 sts and 26 rows to 2 ins over st 1;  
16 sts and 22 rows to 2 ins over st 2.

STITCHES: 
[1] Bodice and bolero are worked as follows:
1st row [right side]:  * Wl forward, p 1, wl bk, sl 1 purl wise, rep from * to end.

2nd row:  P.

3rd row:  * Wl bk, sl 1 purl wise, wl fwd, p 1, rep from * to end.

4th row:  P.  Rep these 4 rows.

[2]  Skirt is worked as follows: 
1st row:  K 8, * sl 2 purl wise, k 15, rep from * to last 10 sts, sl 2, k 8.

2nd row:  P.  Rep these 2 rows.

[3]  Welt of bodice alone is k 1, p 1 rib.

BODICE:  BACK: 
Cast on 116 [122, 128, 134]. 

Work 3 in welt in st 3. 

Change to st 1. Work 4 rows. 

Inc 1 each end of next and every 6th row until there are 136 [144, 154, 162] sts. 

Work until back measures 7 1/2 [8, 8, 8 1/2] ins from beg of st 1, or desired length to beg of sleeves Y.

Shape sleeves: 
Inc 1 each end of next 3 rows, then every 4th row until there are 164 [174, 184, 194] sts. 

Work until sleeve edges measure 6 1/2 [6 3/4, 7, 7 1/4] ins.

Shape shoulders: 
Cast off at beg of next and following rows 5 sts, 12 times and 5 [6, 7, 8] sts 8 times. 

Cast off remaining 64 [66, 68, 70] sts.

FRONT: 
Follow instructions for back to Y. 

Shape sleeves: 
Inc 1 each end of next 3 rows.

Begin neck shaping: 
Next row:  Work 63 [67, 72. 76], join 2nd ball of yarn, cast off 16, work to end. 

Finish both sides at the same time. 

Inc 1 at each sleeve edge every 4th row 11 [12, 12, 13] times, at same time decreasing at each side of neck every 3rd row 24 [25, 26, 27] times. 

When sleeve edges measure same as those of back, shape shoulders. 

Cast off at armhole edge on each side 5 sts 6 times and 5 [6, 7, 8] sts 4 times.

NECK AND FRONT EDGING: 
Cast on 16.

1st row:  K 1, * sl 2, k2, rep from * to last 3 sts, sl 2, k 1.

2nd row:  P.  Rep these 2 rows. 

Work until edging measures same as center-front to 16 cast-off sts.

Next row:  Work 8, join 2nd ball of wool, work 8. 

Now work each side separately until pieces are long enough to fit up sides of neck and meet at center-back when slightly stretched.  Cast off.

TO MAKE UP:  
Sew shoulder and side seams. 

Sew edging to center-front and round neck. 

Work 2 rows of dc round neck and sleeves.  Press.

SKIRT:  BACK: 
Cast on 205 [222, 239, 256]. 

Work in st 2.  Work 7 ins, ending with a p row.

1st dec row:   K 3, k 2 tog, k 3, * sl 2 purl wise, k 6, k 2 tog, k 7, rep from * to last 10 sts, sl 2, k 8. 

Continue in st 2, having 14 sts between pairs of slipped sts, until back measures 11 ins, ending with a p row.

2nd dec row:   K 7, * sl 2, k 6, k 2 tog, k 6, rep from * to last 10 sts, sl 2, k 3, k 2 tog, k 3. 

Continue, keeping pattern correct, until back measures 15 ins.

3rd dec row:  K 3, k 2 tog, k 2 * sl 2, k 5, k 2 tog, k 6, rep from * to last 9 sts, sl 2, k 7. 

Work until back measures 19 ins.

4th dec row:   K 6, * sl 2, k 5, k 2 tog, k 5, rep from * to last 9 sts, sl 2, k 3, k 2 tog, k 2. 

Work until back measures 22 ins.

5th dec row:   K 2, k 2 tog, k 2, * sl 2, k 4, k 2 tog, k 5, rep from * to last 8 sts, sl 2, k 6. 

Work until back measures 24 ins.

6th dec row:  K 5, * sl 2, k 4, k 2 tog, k 4, rep from * to last 8 sts, sl 2, k 2, k 2 tog, k 2. 

Work until back measures 26 ins. 

7th dec row:  K 1, k 2 tog, k 2, * sl 2, k 3, k 2 tog, k 4, rep from * to last 7 sts, sl 2, k 5. 

Work until back measures 27 ins.

8th dec row:  K 4, * sl 2, k 3, k 2 tog, k 3, rep from * to last 7 sts, sl 2, k 2, k 2
tog, k 1. 

Work until back measures 27 1/2 ins.

9th dec row:  K 1, k 2 tog, k 1, * sl 2, k 2, k 2 tog, k 3, rep from * to last 6 sts.

Work until back measures 28 ins or 1 in less than desired length.  Cast off.

FRONT: 
Follow instructions for back.

TO MAKE UP: 
Sew side seams. 

Work 2 rows of dc around hem and 3 rows round waist. 

Press, allowing skirt to stretch 1 inch in length. 

Sew elastic to waist in casing stitch.

DRESS:  INSTRUCTIONS: 
Make bodice and skirt as given, but omit welt of bodice. 

Make up as given but sew bodice to skirt. 

Sew elastic to waist in casing stitch.

BOLERO:  INSTRUCTIONS: 
Begin at back.  Cast on 116 [122, 128, 134].  Work in st 1.

Work 8 rows. 

Inc 1 each end of next and every alternate row until there are 130 [138, 146, 154] sts, then every 3rd row until there are 150 [158, 166, 174] sts, then every alternate row again until there are 164 [174, 184, 194] sts.

Begin sleeves: 
Inc 1 each end of next 9 rows, then cast on 7 at beg of following 10 rows.  252 [262, 272, 282] sts. 

Work until straight sleeve edges measure 5 3/4 [6, 6 1/4, 6 1/2] ins.

Shape neck and fronts: 
Next row:  Work 107 [111, 115, 119], join 2nd ball of wool, cast off 38 [40, 42, 44] for neck, work to end. 

Work both sides at same time.  Work 10 rows. 

Inc 1 at each side of neck in next and every 4th [4th, 3rd, 3rd] row until there are 121 [127, 133, 139] sts on each side. 

Work until straight sleeve edges measure 11 1/2 [12, 12 1/2, 13] ins.

Finish sleeves: 
Cast off at sleeve edges 7 sts 10 times [5 times on each side]. 

Dec 1 at same edges every row 10 times, then every alternate row until 69 [73, 77, 81] sts remain on each side. 

Now dec at center-front edges every alternate row, at same time decreasing at side edges every 3rd row, until 43 [47, 51, 55] sts remain. 

Dec at sides and center-fronts every alternate row 6 times, then dec at center-fronts only every row until 23 [27, 31, 35] sts remain.  Cast off.

BORDER: 
Cast on 36.

1st row:  K 16 for facing, * sl 2, k 2, rep from * to end.

2nd row:  P. 

Rep these 2 rows until band is long enough to fit round neck, fronts and lower edge.  Cast off.

CUFFS: 
Work 11 [11 1/2, 12, 12 1/2] ins as for border.

TO MAKE UP: 
Sew side and sleeve seams. 

Seam ends of border and cuffs. 

With right sides of work together, sew pattern edge of border to bolero, placing seam at left side seam. 

Fold facing to wrong side and slip stitch. 

Sew cuffs to sleeves in same way, matching seam.  Press.
