Vintage 1950s Evening Blouse with Cap Sleeves & Lace Panels #1073

Vintage pattern in a classic, timeless design…lace panels & tucks…cap sleeves…buttons down the bodice front…all adorn beautifully… sure to become one of your season-spanning wardrobe favorites!

MATERIALS:
Coats Mercer-Crochet #20:  Green Label, 7 balls
Pair Milward’s Phantom Knitting Needles #13
Set of 4 Milward’s Double Pointed [DP] Knitting Needles #13
4 Stitch Holders
10 Buttons
Piece of Elastic

MEASUREMENTS
Bust:  34”
Length from top of shoulder:  18 ¼”

GAUGE:
Stockinette Stitch:
10 ½ sts & 13 ½ rows = 1” square

FRONT:
** Using 2 needles, cast on 143 sts.

Proceed in rib as follows:
1ST ROW:  * P 1, k 1, rep from * to last st, p 1.

2ND ROW:  * K 1, p 1, rep from * to last st, k 1.

Rep these 2 rows until work meas 2 ½” from beg, finish at end of 2nd row.

NEXT ROW:  Make hem by k tog 1 st from needle & 1 lp from cast-on edge all across row **.

NEXT ROW:  P 64, cast off 2, p 10 [there is now 11 sts on needle after cast off], cast off 2, p to end.

PLACE FRONT TUCKS:
NEXT ROW:  K 13, p 1, k 2, p 1, k 24, p 1, k 2, p 1, k 19, cast on 5, k 11, cast on 5, k 19, p 1, k 2, p 1, k 24, p 1, k 2, p 1, k 13 [149 sts].

These 12 rows form lace patt used on panels throughout front, 1st dart inc having been worked on 3rd row.

NOTE:  The 32 sts forming lace panel are variable in number during working of patt, but will be referred to as constant 32 throughout patt.

Work 9 rows.

NEXT ROW:  K 14, m 1, k 1, patt 32, k 1, m 1, k 24, sl 1, k 11, sl 1, k 24, m 1, k 1, patt 32, k 1, m 1, k13.

Work 9 rows.

Cont inc in this manner on next & every following 10th row, until 12 sets of inc in all have been worked, finishing on 5th row of patt.

Work 7 rows, thus completing patt [197 sts].

Cont on these sts until work meas 10” from top of hem.

Mark this point with coloured thread.

Cont on these sts until 12th row of 15th patt from beg has been worked.

SHAPE NECK:
NEXT ROW:  K 25, patt 32, k 21, cast off 41, k 21, patt 32, k to end.

Proceed on each group of sts as follows:
Dec 1 st at neck edge on next & every alternate row until 20 dec have been worked at neck edge.

Cont on these sts until work meas 7” from length of coloured thread, finishing at outside edge.

SHAPE SLEEVE:
NEXT ROW:  Work 25, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

NEXT ROW:  Work 17, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

NEXT ROW:  Work 9, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

Break off thread, sl 25 sts at outside edge on to st holder, & leace.

Rejoin thread to sts on needle & shape shoulder by casting off 11 sts at beg of next & every alternate row until all sts are cast off.

BACK:
Work as front from ** to **.

NEXT ROW:  P.

Proceed in stockinette st with dart shaping as follows:
NEXT ROW:  K 13, m 1, k 32, m 1, k 53, m 1, k 32, m 1, k 13.

Work 9 rows.

Cont inc in this manner on next & every following 10th row until 12 sets of inc in all have been worked [191 sts].

Cont on these sts until work matches front up to coloured thread.  Mark with coloured thread as before.

Cont on 191 sts until work meas 7” from coloured thread.

NEXT ROW:  Work 58, cast off 75, work to end.

Proceed on 1st group of 58 sts as follows:
NEXT ROW:  Work 25, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

NEXT ROW:  Work 17, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

NEXT ROW:  Work 9, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work to end.

Break off thread, sl 25 sts at outside edge on to st holder & leave.

Rejoin thread to rem 33 sts & shape shoulder by casting off 11 sts at beg of next [outside edge] & every alternate row until all sts are cast off.

Sl rem group of 58 sts on to spare needle [point at outside edge] rejoin thread & complete to match other half of back.

Graft tog set of 25 sts at top of shoulder, using flat seam, join shoulders.

Fold over 5 cast-on sts to form tuck up front of work, neatly st tuck into position, st down lower edge of tuck to 2 cast-off sts.

Work 2nd tuck to match.

NECK BAND:
Using set of #13 needles, with right side of work facing, k up 220 sts round neck.

Work in rib as follows:
1ST RND:  * P 1, kb 1, rep from * to end of rnd. 

Rep this rnd 3 times.

NEXT RND:  * Yf, k 2 tog tb1, rep from * to end of rnd.

Rep 1st rnd 4 times.  Cast off in rib.

SLEEVE BANDS:
Using #13 needles, with right side of work facing you, k up 171 sts bet 2 points marked by coloured thread.

1ST ROW:  * Pb 1, k 1, rep from * to last st, pb 1.

2ND ROW:  * Kb 1, p 1, rep from * to last st, kb 1.

3RD & 4TH ROWS:  As 1st & 2nd rows.

5TH ROW:  Pb 1, * yrp, p 2 tog, tbl, rep from * to end.

6TH ROW:  As 2nd row.

7TH & 8TH ROWS:  As 1st & 2nd rows.  Cast off in rib.

Work 2nd sleeve band to match.

FINISHING:
Block work & press on wrong side, using damp cloth.

Join side seams.

Thread elastic thru hem, join end of elastic & st tog open ends of hem.

Fold over neckband at row of holes & st to wrong side of work.

Complete sleeve bands to match.

Attach buttons down centre of front as shown in photo.

Press all seams.
