Vintage 1949 Glamour Evening Sweater #996

This delightful sweater will be a joy to wear, as all eyes will follow you!  The cable braiding encompasses the neckline & front down to the charming bow tied at the waist.  Hidden behind the front braided cable is a zipper for easy closure, as high…or low as you wish!

SIZE:
14 & 16.
Directions are for size 14 with changes for size 16 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Potomac Evening Star, 1 oz:   12 [13] skeins
Hiawatha Metallic Elastic Yarn, 3 cards of Gold
Pair Knitting Needles Size #2
Pair Knitting Needles Size #4
1 DP Needle for cabling
1 yd Grosgrain Ribbon 1”
1 Separator Slide Fastener [Zipper]

GAUGE:
6 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

BACK:
Using #2 needles & elastic yarn, cast on 90 [96] sts.
K 2, p 2 in ribbing for 3”.
Always k into back of st when using elastic.
Change to #4 needles & yarn.
Work in garter st [k every row], inc 1 st each end of needle every ½” 7 times.
Work even on 104 [110] sts until piece meas 7” from ribbing.

SLEEVES:
At beg of each of next 12 rows, cast on 4 sts.
Work even on 152 [158] sts until 5 ½” [6 ½”] from last cast-on sts.

SHOULDERS:
At beg of each of next 12 rows bind off 3 [4] sts.
At beg of next 12 rows bind off 7 sts.
Bind off rem sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT:
Using #2 needles & metallic, cast on 46 [54] sts.
K 2, p 2 in ribbing for 3”.
Change to #4 needles, tie in yarn & k across.
At beg of next row [front edge], cast on 20 sts; p 20, k 46 [54] sts.
Keep 1st 46 [54] sts in garter st & rem sts in stockinette st for cable band, inc 1 st at underarm edge every 1/2" 8 times.
At same time cabling on front band sts every 3 ½” to neck.

TO MAKE CABLE:
With right side facing you, k across to last 20 sts; sl next 10 sts to dp needle; k next 10 sts; k 10 sts from dp needle.

SLEEVES:
When piece meas 7” [7 ½”] from ribbing, at underarm edge cast on 4 sts every other row 6 times.
Work even on 98 [106] sts until 3” [3 ½”] from last cast-on sts.
At neck edge dec 1 st every other row on 2 sts inside cable border sts 18 [20] times.
When sleeve meas same as back, at arm edge bind off 3 [4] sts every other row 6 times; bind off 7 sts 6 times.
Cont to work cable border on rem sts until band reaches to center back of neck.
Work right front to correspond with left front, reverse all shaping & have 20 border sts at beg of needle on right side of work.

FINISHING:
Sew shoulder seams.
Weave cable bands tog at center back of neck, sew band along neck edge.

CUFFS:
With right side facing you, using #2 needles & metallic, pick up about 84 [92] sts along edge of sleeve.
K 2, p 2 in ribbing for 8 rows.
Bind off loosely in ribbing.

WAIST TABS:
With right side facing you, using yarn & #4 needles, pick up about 28 sts along edge of ribbing at front.
Work in garter st for 3 ½”.
Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row until all sts are worked off.
Sew side seams
Grosgrain ribbon can be sewn along inside of cable band sts.
Sew separator slide fastener [zipper] to edge of ribbon.
