Vintage 1957 Elegant Cable Bolero Jacket #471

Quick & easy to knit  this charming bolero…stylish lines of design & cable pattern…sophisticated & smart, season-spanning, wardrobe favorite…perfect for any occasion!

SIZES: 
Directions are for Small [10-12], with changes for Medium [14-16] & Large [18-20] in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Bernat Cuddlespun 2 oz, 8 [8, 10] skeins
1 Pair each #7 & #10 ½ Straight Knitting Needles
#I Aluminum Crochet Hook
10 Buttons

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 2”;      11 rows = 2”

PATTERN STITCH [PATT ST]:  Multiple of 4 sts.
1ST ROW:  P 1, * k 2, p 2, rep from *, end p 1 instead of p 2.
2ND ROW:  K 1, * p 1, yo, p 1, k 2, rep from *, end k 1 instead of k 2.
3RD ROW:  P 1, * k 3, p 2, rep from * end p 1 instead of p 2.
4TH ROW:  K 1, * p 3, k 2, rep from *, end k 1 instead of k 2.
5TH ROW:  P 1, * sl 1, k 2, psso 2 k sts, p 2, rep from *, end p 1 instead of p 2.
Rep 2nd thru 5th rows for patt st.

BACK: 
Use #10 ½ needles, cast on 60 [64, 68] sts. 
Work even in patt st until piece meas 5 ½” [5 ½”, 6”].

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES: 
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 3 sts. 
Dec 1 st each end of needle every other row 20 [21, 22] times. 
Bind off rem 14 [16, 18] sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Use #10 ½ needles, cast on 40 [44, 48] sts.  Work even in patt st until piece meas 4”. 

SHAPE FRONT: 
On next row at front edge inc 1 st st & rep this inc every other row twice more, form new patts as sts are inc.  Work even on 43 [47, 51] sts until piece meas 5 ½” [5 ½”, 6”], end with same row of patt st as on back at underarm.

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE:  At arm edge bind off 3 sts.  Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 15 [16, 17] times, end with right side row.

SHAPE NECK: 
At front edge bind off 15 [16, 17] sts. 
Cont to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row 5 times more, at front edge dec 1 st EVERY ROW 5 [7, 9] times.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to corres to left front, reverse all shaping.

SLEEVES: 
Use #7 needles, cast on 32 [36, 36] sts. 
K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1”. 
Change to #10 ½ needles & work in patt st, inc 1 st each end of needle every other row 7 [6, 7] times, form new patts as sts are inc. 
Work even on 46 [48, 50] sts until piece meas 5 ½” [5 ½”, 6”], end with same row of patt st as on back at underarm.

SHAPE RAGLAN CAP: 
At beg of each of next 2 rows bind off 3 sts. 
Dec 1 st each end of needle every row 20 [21, 22] times.  Fasten off.

BAND: 
Use #7 needles, cast on 9 sts.
1ST ROW:  K 1, * p 1, k 1, rep from * across row.
2ND ROW:  P 1, * k 1, p 1, rep from * across row.
Rep these 2 rows for ½”, end with 2nd row.

BUTTONHOLE: 
K 1, p 1, k 1, yo, p 2 tog, work to end of row.  
Make 4 more buttonholes, evenly spaced--last one to be made when piece is same length as front edge to start of neck shaping, meas from lower right front edge.  
Cont in ribbing until piece is long enough to fit around entire jacket.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Sew sleeves to back & front armholes.  Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

SECOND BAND: 
Use #7 needles, cast on 7 sts.  
Work in same manner as band until piece meas ½”, end with 2nd row.  
Form buttonhole in same manner as on band.  
Work 4 more buttonholes, spaced to corres with buttonholes on band, end with 1st row.  
Work 1 row even.  
At beg of next row dec 1 st & rep this dec at same edge EVERY ROW 5 times more.  Fasten off.  
Beg at lower edge, sew this band over 6 sts of 4th patt stripe from lower right front edge.  
Beg at lower right front, sew band around front, neck & lower edges, ease in to fit neck shaping.  Finish

Buttonholes on 2nd band, thru yos of patt.  
Steam seams lightly.  Sew on buttons.
