Vintage 1950s Casual Wrap Coat #153 - Knit

SIZE
Small, Medium, Large

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust
Small:  32“- 34“
Medium:  36” - 38”
Large:  40” - 42”

MATERIALS
Mohair 1 oz balls -- 19 [ 21 - 23 ]
Pair # 11 straight knitting needles
#00 Steel crochet hook

GAUGE:
3 sts = 1”;
4 ½ rows = 1”

NOTE: 
If necessary change to larger or smaller needles to maintain gauge.  Larger sizes can be attained by switching to larger needles.

BACK: 
Cast on 60 [ 66 - 72 ] sts. 

Work throughout in stockinette st [ k 1 row, p 1 row ]. 

Work even until 20” [ 21” - 22” ] or desired length to armhole.  End with a p row.

Raglan armholes: 
1st row:  k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to last 4 sts, k 2 tog, k 2. 

2nd row:  P.

Repeat these 2 rows until 16 sts remain.  Bind off.

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 41 [ 45 - 49 ] sts. 

Work in stockinette st.  Inc 1 st at front edge only every row 4 times. 

Work even on 45 [ 49 - 53 ] sts until piece measures 14” [ 15” - 16” ] from beg.

Neck: 
At front edge dec 1 st every 3rd row 23 [ 24 - 25 ] times. 
At the same time when seam edge is same length as Back, shape raglan at seam edge to correspond to back raglan--all sts will be decreased.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing shaping.

SLEEVES: 
Cast on 30 [ 32 - 34 ] sts. 

Work 3 rows even in stockinette st. 

On p side k 1 row for hemline. 

Continue in stockinette st work even for 1 ½” then inc 1 st at beg & end of needle every inch until there are 50 [ 56 - 62 ] sts on needle. 

Work even until piece measures 14 ½” from hemline or desired length to armhole. 

Shape raglan armholes same as back. 

Bind off remaining 6 sts.

COLLAR:  Right Half: 
Cast on loosely 45 [ 47 - 49 ] sts. 

Rib in k 1, & p 1 for 10 rows.  Place on holder. 

Cast on loosely 44 [ 46 - 48 ] sts. 

Rib throughout in k 1 & p 1. 

Work 1 row. 

Mark 1 edge as decreased edge. 

Opposite edge will be straight [ no decreases ]. 

Dec 1 st at decreased edge every row 4 times. 

Then at same edge bind off 4 sts every other row 3 times. 

Now work across row & across sts on holder, being sure to match ribs of pattern. 

Now at decreased edge continue to bind off 4 sts every other row 8 times; then 3 sts every other row 7 times & finally 10 [ 12 - 14 ] sts twice.  Fasten off. 

Work left half to correspond.

BELT: 
For narrow belt cast on 6 sts; for broad belt 15 sts. 

Rib in k 1 and p 1 for desired length.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Sew sleeve, & side seams. 

Set in sleeves. 

Turn under hems & tack in place. 

Join collar pieces at straight edges for center back. 

Sew to neckline as shown in photograph. 

Work 1 row of sc around all raw edges. 

Block to size. 

Do not press.
