Vintage 1945 Baby Sweater & Diaper Cover 2-Piece Set #B-126

Perfect for a baby shower…or simply to add to your baby’s wardrobe.  Baby will be living in comfort once you quick knit up this little two-piece sweater & diaper cover set.

SIZE:
Infant

MATERIALS:
Chadwicks Red Heart Baby Wool, 6 balls [3/4 oz balls]
Pair Knitting Needles #3 [3 mm]
1 ½ yds Narrow Ribbon
2 Small Buttons

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

SWEATER:
Starting at lower edge of back, cast on 72 sts.

1ST ROW:  [RIGHT SIDE]:  * K 1, p 1.  Rep from * across.

2ND ROW:  P across.

Rep 1st & 2nd rows alternately until piece meas 7 ½” ending with 2nd row.

NEXT ROW:  Cast on 36 sts for sleeve, * k 1, p 1.  Rep from * across 108 sts.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Cast on 36 sts for other sleeve, p across 144 sts.

Cont in patt until piece meas 10” total, ending with 2nd row.

NEXT ROW:  Work across 56 sts, bind off next 32 sts for back of neck, work across rem 56 sts.

Work across last set of sts only for 1”, ending at neck edge.

Cast on 16 sts for left front of neck.

Work straight over these 72 sts for 2 ½”, ending at sleeve edge.

Starting at sleeve edge, bind off 36 sts.

Work straight in patt over rem 36 sts for 7 ½”.  Bind off.

Attach yarn at opposite side of back of neck & work straight for 1”, ending at neck edge.

Cast on 32 sts for right front of neck & work straight over these 88 sts for 2 ½”, ending at sleeve edge.

Starting at sleeve edge, bind off 36 sts.

Work straight over rem 52 sts for 7 ½”.  Bind off.

WRISTBAND:
With right side facing you, pick up 38 sts along lower edge of sleeve.

Work tightly in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1”.

Bind off loosely in ribbing.

NECKBAND:
With right side facing you, pick up 92 sts along neck edge.
1ST ROW:  * K 1, p 1.  Rep from * across.

2ND ROW:  * K 1, p 1, o, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.

3RD & 4TH ROWS:  Same as 1st row.

Bind off in ribbing.

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Work row of sc along lower & front edges.

Press thru damp cloth.

Run ½ yd of ribbon thru eyelets at neck edge, lapping right front over left front.

DIAPER COVER:
BACK:
Starting at waistband, cast on 96 sts.

Work tightly in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for ½”.

NEXT ROW:  * [K 1, p 1] twice; o, k 2 tog.  Rep from * across.

Cont in ribbing until waistband meas 1 ¼”.

Now work 1st & 2nd rows of sweater until piece meas 7” total.

SHAPE LEG OPENINGS:
Dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 70 sts rem.

Dec 1 st at end of each row until 42 sts rem.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every 4th row until 24 sts rem [flap].  Bind off.

FRONT:
Work same as back until 42 sts rem.  Bind off.

Sew side seams.

Work sc along entire lower edge, making 2 buttonloops at each end of flap on back.

Press thru damp cloth.

Turn up flap * sew on buttons to correspond with buttonloops.

Run ribbon thru eyelets at waistband.
