Vintage 1940s Baby’s Coat, Bonnet & Booties #B123


A clever needlewoman will quickly crochet this delightful coat, cap & booties
in a shell pattern.  Season-spanning & perfect for many special occasions!

SIZE: 
Newborn to 6 months.

Materials:
COAT:   Bucilla Crochelle or Fleishers Glo-Twist, 16 Balls
CAP:  Bucilla Crochelle or Fleishers Glo-Twist, 3 Balls
BOOTIES:  Bucilla Crochelle or Fleishers Glo-Twist, 3 Balls
#7 Steel Crochet Hook

GAUGE: 
10 dc = 1”; 
5 dc rows = 1”;
6 patterns = 3 ½”; 
4 pattern rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS: 
Chest 19 ½”; 
Length of long coat from lower edge to underarm 15 ½”,
Sleeves width 7”

A charming sacque, instead of long coat, may be made if desired. 
To make the sacque, work the same as long coat until 7” below underarm, end with row 2 of patt. 
End with the final row which is the same as the final row of long coat. 
Complete same as long coat. (Requires 10 balls).

COAT:  YOKE: 
Ch 98 for lower edge of back, 1 dc in 4th st from hk, 1 dc in each rem st of ch; 96 dc, including ch 3. 
Always count ch 3 as 1 dc.

2ND ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd & each rem st, end 1 dc in top of ch 3.

3RD ROW:  Same as row 2.

ARMHOLES: 
4TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, yo, draw up lp in next st, yo, thru 2 lps, yo, draw up lp in next st, yo, thru 2 lps, yo, thru 3 lps (a dec), 1 dc in each st to within 3 sts of end, dec. 1 st as before, 1 dc in turning ch; 94 dc. 

NEXT ROW:  Work 1 row even.

NEXT ROW:  Dec. 1 st each side; 92 dc.

Work 13 rows even.

Right Shoulder & Front: 
20TH ROW:  Ch 3. turn. 1 dc in 2nd & each of next 28 sts; 30 dc.  Turn.

NEXT ROWS:  Work even on these 30 sts for 8 rows more, end at neck edge, drop lp from hk; join separate strand in same st as last dc was worked in, ch 16 for front of neck, fasten off; pick up dropped lp & work 1 sc in each st of ch; 46 dc.

NEXT ROWS:  Work 6 rows even.

35TH ROW:  Work dc to within 2 sts of end (underarm), 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in turning ch.

NEXT ROW:  Work 1 row even.

37TH ROW:  Same as row 35; 48 dc.

NEXT ROWS:  Work 3 rows even.  Fasten off.

Left Shoulder & Front: 
20TH ROW:  Sk next 32 sts on last long row, with lp on hk work 1 dc in next st, cont dc to end; 30 sts.

NEXT ROWS:  Work 7 rows even.

28TH ROW:  Ch 18 for front of neck, 1 dc in 4th st from hk & in each ch & st to end; 46 sts.

Complete to correspond to other side.  Fasten off.

Sew side seams for 3 rows at lower edge.

Edging: 
Beg at lower edge, work 2 sc in end of each row on right front edge; 26 sc.  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * ch 3 for buttonhole, sk 3 sts, 1 sc in each of next 7 sts; rep from * twice, end last rep 1 sc in each of 2 sts.

NEXT ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st & ch.  Fasten off.

Beg at neck edge, work 3 rows sc on left front edge to correspond, omitting buttonholes; do not fasten off at end of last row.

Beading: 
Continue around lower edge, working 51 sc across left front; 97 sc across back; 51 sc across right front; 199 sc.

2ND ROW:  (X ST ROW):  Ch 5, turn, 1 long trc (yo hk 3 times) in 2nd st, * ch 3, yo hk 3 times, sk 3 sts, draw up lp in next st (5 lps on hk), yo, thru 2 lps, yo, thru 2 lps (3 lps on hk), draw up lp in center of last long trc, yo, thru 3 lps, yo, thru 2 lps (X st patt), 1 long trc in same st as last half of X st *; rep bet *s, end last rep 1 long trc in last st; 49 X st patts, plus 1 st each side.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in sp, 1 sc in next st *; rep bet *s, end 1 sc in top of turning ch; 198 sc.

BODY:  PATTERN: 
1ST ROW:  WRONG SIDE:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd st, * sk 1 st, 1 trc (yo hk twice) in next st, ch 4, 4 trc around post of trc just worked, sk 1 st, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across row: 49 patts.

2ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, * ch 2, 1 sc in top of ch 4, ch 2, 1 dc in each of 2 dc; rep from *, end last rep ch 2, 1 dc in dc, 1 dc in turning ch.

3RD ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, * sk ch 2, 1 trc in next sc, ch 4, 4 trc around post of trc just worked, sk ch 2, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc; rep from * across row.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 56 patt rows in all, end with row 2.

FINAL ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 2 dc, * ch 2, 1 sc in next sc, ch 2, 1 sc in each of next 2 dc; rep from *, end 1 sc in last dc, 1 sc in turning ch.  Fasten off.

Sleeves: 
Ch 75 for top of sleeve.

1ST ROW:  1 Trc in 5th st from hk, * ch 4, 4 tr around post of trc just worked, sk 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, 1 trc in next st; rep from * 10 times, ch 4, 4 trc around post of last trc, sk 3 sts, 1 sc in last st; 12 patts.

2ND ROW:  Ch 5, turn, 1 sc in top of ch 4, * ch 2,1 dc in each of 2 dc, ch 2, 1 sc in top of ch 4 *; rep bet *s 10 times, ch 2, sk trc on row below, work 1 dc in next st (top of turning ch).

3RD ROW:  Ch 3, turn, sk ch 2, 1 trc in next sc, ch 4, 4 trc around post of last trc worked, cont patt, end sk 2 sts of turning ch, 1 dc in next st.

Rep last 2 rows until there are 28 rows in all, end with row 2.  Do not break.

CUFFS: 
Ch 1, turn, work 40 sc across row, spacing sts evenly.  Ch 3, turn. 

Work 3 rows dc.  Fasten off.

COLLAR: 
Working from right side, with lp on hk, work 81 sc around neck edge (15 on each front, 10 each side, 31 on back).

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, sl st over first 7 sts, ch 3, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * 21 times, 1 dc in next st, leave rem 6 sts free; 92 dc.

3RD ROW:  Ch 5, turn, 1 long trc in 2nd st, rep bet *s of row 2 of beading across row, sk 2 sts instead of 3 bet halves of X st; 30 X st patts, plus 1 st each side.  Fasten off.

4TH ROW:  Turn, work around collar as follows; join with sl st in 5th sc from front edge, work 7 sc on side edge, cont on outer edge working 2 sc in first st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in ch 2 sp, 1 sc in next st *, rep bet *s 29 times, 2 sc in top of turning ch, 7 sc on side edge; 138 sc, sl st in 5th sc from front edge.

5TH ROW:  Sl st in each of next 2 sc.  Turn, 5 trc in first sc on edge of collar, * sk 3 sts, 1 trc in next st, ch 4, 4 trc around post of last trc made *; rep bet *s, end with sl st in 3rd st from front edge.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Sew sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Steam lightly. 

Lace ribbon thru X st row as illustrated.

CAP:  BACK: 
Ch 4, join with sl st into ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join with sl st in top of ch 3; 12 dc, counting ch 3 as 1 dc.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in sl st, 2 dc in each of rem 11 sts, join; 24 dc.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in sl st, 1 dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from * around, join; 36 dc.

4TH RND:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in sl st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * around, join; 48 dc.

NEXT RNDS:  Work 6 more rnds, inc 12 sts in each rnd as before having 1 st more bet incs every rnd; 120 sts, join.

11TH RND:  RIGHT SIDE:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st, join; 120 sc.

PATTERN: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in sl st, * sk 1 st, 1 trc in next st, ch 4, 4 trc around post of trc just worked, sk 1 st, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts; rep from * 20 times, working 2 dc at end of last rep in 1 st; 21 patts (15 sts left free for back of neck). 

Work patt as for long coat on these 21 patts, for 17 rows more, end on right side.  Do not break.

Turn-Back Border: 
Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of first 2 sts, * 2 dc in ch 2 sp, 2 dc in sc, 2 dc in ch 2 sp, 1 dc in each of 2 dc; rep from * across row; 171 dc.

2ND ROW:  Work X st row same as row 2 of beading on long coat; 42 X st patts, plus 1 st each side.

3RD ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first st, * 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in sp, 1 sc in next st *; rep bet *s, end 1 sc in top of turning ch; 170 sc.

4TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 trc in 2nd st, * ch 4, 4 trc around post of trc just worked, sk 3 sts, 1 trc in next st; rep from * across row.  Do not break.

Neck Band: 
Cont on side edge as follows: Ch 1, spacing sts evenly work 40 sc to back of neck, 15 sc across back of neck, 40 sc on other side; 95 sc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Steam lightly. 

Fold border over on right side & tack. 

Lace ribbon thru X st row & trim as illustrated.

BOOTIES:  HEEL: 
Ch 14, 1 dc in 4th st from hk, 1 dc in each rem st; 12 dc, including ch.

2ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd & each st, end 1 dc in turning ch.

FOLLOWING ROWS:  Rep last row 3 times.

6TH ROW:  RIGHT SIDE:  Work around 3 sides of heel as follows:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd & each of next 9 sts, cont down side, working 5 dc around end st (turning ch), 3 dc on end of next row, 2 dc on end of next row, 3 dc on end of next row, 5 dc on end of next row, cont on 3rd side working 1 dc in each of 11 sts of foundation ch; 40 sts.

Work 6 rows dc even on these 40 sts, ch 12 at end of last row, join with sl st to top of turning ch at beg of row.  Fasten off.

TOE: 
1ST ROW:  Turn, sk 12 ch & 19 sts, with lp on hk work 1 dc in each of next 21 sts, 1 dc in each of 12 eh sts, 1 dc in each of 19 sk sts, join with sl st in first st; 52 dc.

2ND ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in each of next 9 sts, dec 1 st in next 2 sts as follows, yo, draw up lp in next st, yo, thru 2 lps, yo, draw up lp in next st, yo, thru 2 lps, yo, thru 3 lps, work 6 dc, dec. 1 st as before, work 5 dc, dec. 1 st, work 5 dc, dec, 1 st, work 6 dc, dec. 1 st, work 10 dc, join in top of turning ch; 47 dc.

3RD, 5TH, 7TH & 9TH ROWS:  Ch 3, turn, work even, join.

4TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work 9 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 9 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 10 dc, join; 43 dc.

6TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work 8 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 7 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 9 dc, join: 39 dc.

8TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work 7 dc, dec 1 st, * work 5 dc, dec 1 st; rep from * twice, work 8 dc, join; 35 dc.

10TH ROW:  Ch 3, turn, work 6 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 3 dc, dec 1 st, work 5 dc, dec 1 st, work 7 dc, join; 31 dc.

FINAL ROW:  Do not turn, sl st over 8 sts, ch 3, work 1 dc in back lp of each of next 14 sts.  Fasten off, leaving end. 

Sew top of last 15 sts worked to free sts of row 10 to form blunt toe.

LEG: 
Beg at center back of heel, work 63 sc around top of bootee, sp sts evenly.

2ND ROW:  X ST ROW:  Same as row 2 of beading on long coat; 15 X st patts, plus 1 st each side.

3RD ROW:  Same as row 3 of beading on long coat; 62 sc.

PATTERN: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 3, turn, 1 dc in 2nd dc, * sk 2 sts, 1 trc in next st, ch 4, 4 trc around post of trc just worked, sk 2 sts, 2 dc in next st; rep from * across row; 10 patts.

Work same as body patt of long coat until 6 patt rows in all.

FINAL ROW:  Ch 3, turn, * sk dc & ch 2, 1 trc in next sc, ch 4, 4 trc around post of last trc worked, sk ch 2, 1 trc in next dc, ch 4, 4 trc around post of last trc worked; rep from * across row.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Sew back seam. 

Trim as illustrated.
