Vintage 1938 Two-Piece Dress #143 - Knit

“Light Refreshment” Warm weather perfection --this two-piece knitted dress of Knit-Cro-Sheen.  Smart and striking, and delightfully cool.  Arabesque scrolls down the front, delicate and charming.  V neck flattering to all figures and ages.

MATERIALS: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen 10 balls
Pair #1 [ 2 ½ mm] knitting needles           
#5 crochet hook
1 yd elastic

MEASUREMENTS:
Blouse:  Bust -- 34 “. 
Length from top of shoulder -- 19 ½ “.
Length of sleeve, underarm seam -- 4 ½ “
Skirt:  Waist -- 28 ”.
Hips -- 36 ins.
Length of skirt -- 29 “.
Width at hem -- 52 “.

GAUGE: 
15 sts = 2 “; 
10 rows = 1 “.

BLOUSE:
Back: 
Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 108 sts & work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3”, inc 19 sts at equal distances apart on last row [127 sts].

Work as follows: 
1st row: 
* K 3, p 1.  Rep from * across, ending row with k 3.

2nd row:  P across. 
These 2 rows constitute the patt. 

Rep these 2 rows alternately, inc 1 st at both ends of every 8th row twice [ 131 sts]. 

Work straight until piece meas 11 ½” in all.

To shape armholes: 
Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at end of each row until 101 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 7 “ from 1st row of armhole shaping.

To shape shoulders, bind off 6 sts at beg of each row until 41 sts rem.  Bind off.

Front: 
Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 108 sts & work in ribbing of k 1, p 1, for 3”, inc 18 sts at equal distances apart on last row [ 126 sts ].

Work in patt as follows: 
1st row:  [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, [ k 2 tog, O, k 6 ] twice, k 2 tog, O, k 4, [  ] twice, k 2 tog, O, [ k 3, p 1 ] k 2 tog, O, k 6 ] twice, k 2 tog, O, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

2nd & all even rows:  P across.

3rd row:  [ K 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, [ O, k 2 tog, k 6 ] twice, O, k 2 tog, k 4, [ O, k 2 tog, k 6 ] twice, O, k 2 tog, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

5th row:  Same as 1st row.

7th row:  [K 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, * O, k 2 tog; then make cable [ to make a cable, sl off next 3 sts on a st holder; keeping st holder back of work, k next 3 sts, then k sts on st holder ].

Rep from * once more, O, k 2 tog, k 4, O, k 2 tog, make another cable, O, k 2 tog, make another cable, O, k 2 tog, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

8th row:  P across.

These 8 rows constitute patt. 

Rep these 8 rows, inc 1 st at both ends of next row & every 6th row thereafter until there are 140 sts on needle. 

Work straight until piece meas 12”.

To shape armholes: 
Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows & 3 sts at beg of each of following 4 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 104 sts rem.

On next row, with right side of work toward you, work in patt across 1st 52 sts, turn. 

Hereafter work over these 52 sts only, keep 20 sts at neck edge in patt & dec 1 st on next row & every 3rd row thereafter inside border, until 30 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 7” from 1st row of armhole shaping.

To shape shoulder, starting at armhole edge, bind off 5 sts every other row until all sts are worked off.  Break off. 

Attach thread to neck edge & work opposite side to correspond. 

Sleeves
Starting at bottom, on straight needles cast on 92 sts & work in ribbing for 1”, inc 12 sts at equal distances apart on last row [ 104 sts ].

Then cont, working in patt, as follows:
1st row:  [ K 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, [ k 2 tog, O, k 6 ] twice, k 2 tog, O, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

2nd & all even rows:  P across.

3rd row:  [K 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, [ O, k 2 tog, k 6 ] twice, O, k 2 tog, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

5throw:  Same as 1st row.

7th row:  [ K 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3, * O, k 2 tog, make cable.  Rep from * once more, O, k 2 tog, [ k 3, p 1 ] 10 times, k 3.

8th row:  P across. 

Rep these 8 rows until piece meas 4 ½”.

To shape top of sleeve, bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Then dec 1 st at end of each row until 54 sts rem. 

Now dec 1 st at both ends of each row until 22 sts rem.  Bind off. 

Sew up shoulder seams. 

Sew up underarm seams, easing in extra fullness of Front 1 ½” down from armhole shaping. 

Sew up sleeve seams & sew sleeves in. 

Work 2 rows of sc all around neck edge.

SKIRT: 
Starting at bottom, with circular needle cast on 385 sts.  Join, being careful not to twist sts.

1st rnd:  * K 6, p 1.  Rep from * around.

2nd rnd:  K around. 

Rep these 2 rnds alternately until piece meas 4”. 

On next rnd, dec 10 sts at equal distances apart, making decs in center of every 5th k rib. 

** Work straight for 1 ½”.

On next rnd, dec 10 sts at equal distances apart, but making decs in center of k ribs where decs were not made prev.  

Rep from ** 2 more times [ 345 sts ]. 

*** Work straight for 2”. 

Then on next rnd, dec 8 sts at equal distances apart. 

Rep from *** 4 more times [ 305 sts ]. 

Work straight until piece meas 20” in all.

On next rnd & on 1 rnd every in thereafter, dec 12 sts at equal distances apart until 209 sts rem. 

Work straight until piece meas 29”.  Bind off. 

Work 2 rows of sc around bottom of skirt. 

Beading: 
Attach thread to top of skirt & work row of sc all around waistline. 

At end of rnd, * ch 6, sl st in 6th row on wrong side & 4 sts to left. 

Ch 6, sl st in 6th st from last st at top edge.  Rep from * around, forming V’s for elastic casing.  Break off. 

Run elastic through beading.
