Vintage 1935 Cotton Sports Dress #187 - Knit

This simple but smart sports dress is knitted with double cotton in two colors which give a tweed effect.  It has a medium low suntan back & the six gores give the necessary fullness.

SIZE:  16

MATERIALS: 
Lily Mercerized Crochet Cotton, 8 balls mint.
Lily Tru-tone Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 8 balls peach.
1 Pair #3 ½ mm knitting needles
1 Circular #3 ½ mm knitting needle
1 Large fancy button or buckle for belt
7/8 yd White elastic ½ in width

NOTE: 
The model pictured was made with two types of yarn. 
It works out equally well using a double strand of one type.

GAUGE: 
12 sts = 2”;    
17 rows = 2”.

SKIRT: 
With 1 strand each of both yarns, cast on 348 sts for lower edge.  K 18, * p 21, k 37; rep from * 4 times, p 21, k 19. 

Rep this rnd 12 times. 

On next rnd k 18, * p 2 tog, p 17, p 2 tog, k 37; rep from * 4 times, p 2 tog, p 17, p 2 tog, k 19. 

Work 13 rnds. 

Rep the decs each side of 6 purled divisions, having 2 sts less between decs in each division. 

Cont to dec every 13th rnd or 1 ½”, until 1 p st remains in each section [228 sts]. 

K plain all sts for 8” or until 23” from beg. 

K every 21st & 22nd sts tog making 10 decs on rnd. 

K 1 ½”.  K 12, k 2 tog, k 19, rep from *, until 10 decs, k to end of rnd. 

K 1 ½”; cont to dec 10 times every 1 ½“ equal distances apart & bet decs of last shaped rnd.  Work thus until 178 sts. 

Work 1” or desired length, bind off.

WAIST: 
Cast on 88 sts for lower edge of back with double strand yarn, k 1 row, p 1 row for 2”. 

Inc 1 st each side; rep incs every 2”- 3 times & 8” from beg. 

K 40 sts, sl on holder, bind off 16 sts for center back. 

K 40 sts. 

On beg p row bind off 6 sts for underarm, p 34. 

Dec 1 st at end of next 6 k rows for armhole, & dec 1 st at inside or neck edge every 8th row 4 times. 

Work even until 7” from underarm, bind off 24 sts. 

Take up 40 sts from holder, p 1 row. 

Bind off 6 sts on beg of k rows 6 times & on end of every 8th k rows 4 times. 

Finish as for first side.

FRONT
Cast on 102 sts. 

Inc each side every 2”- 4 times. 

Bind off 6 sts each side for underarm. 

Dec 1 st each side every k row 7 times. 

Work even until 5 ½” from underarm. 

Work 24 sts, bind off 36 sts; work 24 sts even for 2”, bind off. 

Sew side & shoulder seams. 

Mark center of 2 purled divisions for center front & back of skirt. 

Sew to waist with center fronts & backs matching, & divide evenly extra fullness of waist to fit top of skirt.

CROCHET EDGE: 
Attach green at one side of back of neck, with right side of work toward you, sc 2 rows around neck edge, make 4 sc on end of every 6 rows & dec 1 st at each of 4 corners.  Rep around armholes.

SHOULDER BOWS: 
With green ch 16 sts, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each st on chain, ch 1, turn. 

Sc 15 sts for 1 ½”. 

*  Next row work to within 4 sts of end of row, 1 sl st in next st, turn, sl st 3, sc to end, rep from * until 3 sts rem, fasten off. 

Sc 15 sts on opposite side of foundation ch & work to correspond.  

LOOP: 
Ch 1 ¾”, sc 1 row on each side of foundation ch, fasten off. 

Holding in center of bow, wrap loop over it to simulate a bow. 

Make a second bow.

BELT: 
With green ch desired waist meas, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each st on ch, ch 1, turn. 

Work until 1” wide. 

Then sc around all sides, making 3 sc in corners. 

Ch width of belt, fasten in lower edge, turn, sc over chain to make loop fastening.
