Vintage 1943 Girl’s Jazzy Knit Jumper

Your little girl is delicious in this jazzy jumper with its stylish gored skirt, trimmed with a charming scallop edging…just right for that afternoon stroll with mother…precisely right to wear to get those beneficial sunrays!

SIZE:  3 - 5 years [Size can be adjusted by changing size of needles & yarn.]

MATERIALS:
Baby Yarn or Soft 3-ply Yarn, 3 ounces Blue & small amount of contrasting color for scallop edging on skirt.
#1 #3 American Standard Knitting Needles.
#3 Circular Needle
Crochet Hook
2 Buttons

GAUGE:  8 sts = 1”


Start at bottom with #3 circular needle, cast on 420 sts [441 sts, size 4], join & be careful not to twist sts.
1ST RND:  * K 20, P 1, rep from * around & rep this rnd for 2”.
DEC RND:  * K 1, K 2 tog, K 14, K 2 tog, K 1, P 1, rep from *around.
Work even for 2”.
Make another dec in same manner having 2 sts less bet each dec.
Now dec every inch, until skirt meas 8”, 180 sts.

Cast on 2 sts at end of next 2 rows, now skirt is worked.
K 1 Row.
P 1 Row, [back & forth], always keep first & last 4 sts K on p rows for border at vent, cont patt, K 1 st on p rows.
Work 1” even, or desired length to waistline.
NEXT ROW:  Wrong side, K 2, bind off 2 sts for button hole.
NEXT ROW:  Cast on 2 sts over those bound off & dec 10 sts [dec in center of every other gore].
Change to #1 needles, K 1, P 1 for 1 ¼” & make 1 more buttonhole spaced 1” apart.  Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Now K 1 st, P 1 st, for 32 sts, place on st holder, bind off 24 sts [underarm], work in ribbing for 22 sts, cast on 10 sts.
Now work on these 32 sts in ribbing & dec 1 st at beg of every row, until you have 11 sts.  Work in ribbing on 11 sts until strap meas 10”.
Work 4 sts, bind off 3, work 4 sts.
NEXT ROW:  Cast on 3 sts over those bound off.  Work 1” even.
Make another buttonhole.
Dec 1 st at beg of next 4 rows, bind off.
Join yarn at front & work over 32 sts, work to match to other strap.
Join yarn, bind off 24 sts [underarm], work 32 sts same as fronts until you have 11 sts, bind off.
Work other back to match.

FINISHING:  Work 1 Row of sc around border & straps, if desired.
Work 1 sc around bottom of skirt.
With contrasting shades work scallop as follows:  Fasten thread at center back, * sk 2 sc, work 1 hdc, 5 dc, 1 hdc in next sc, sk 2 sc, sc in next st, rep from *around.
Sew 10 cast on sts in back of left front.  Sew buttons on tabs at back.
