Vintage 1943 Crushable High Hat #229

MATERIALS:
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, or
Bucilla Strawkraft [ all rayon ], 3 skeins

#2 Steel Hook

GAUGE: 

15 sts = 3”;    

11 rnds = 3”

HAT:

1^st rnd:  Ch 11, 3 sc in 3^rd st from hook, 2 sc in each of next 7 sts, 5 sc in last st, 2 sc in each of 7 sts on other side of foundation ch, 2 sc in same st as 1^st 3 sc [38 sc].

2^nd rnd:  Cont around, work 1 hdc in each st of rnd below.

3^rd rnd:  * 1 Hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * 18 times [57 sts].

4^th rnd:  1 Hdc in next st, 3 hdc in next st, mark 3^rd st of group just made as center back at 1 hdc in each of next 55 sts [59 sts].

5^th rnd:  1 Hdc in each st.  Cont as for last 2 rnds, work 3 sts in center-back st every 2^nd rnd, & mark 3^rd st of group as center back st, until there are 17 rnds in all [71 sts], end at center back.

1^st inc rnd:  3 Hdc in center back st, * 1 hdc in each of 6 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * 8 times, work to end of rnd [82 sts].  Work 1 rnd even.

Next rnd, inc 2 sts in back st as before & work even to end.

Work 1 rnd even.

2^nd inc rnd:  3 Hdc in center back st, * 1 hdc in each of 8 sts, 2 hdc in next st; rep from * 8 times, work to end [95 sts]. 

Work next 6 rnd inc 2 sts in center back st every 2^nd rnd 3 times [101 sts].

Work 3 rnds even, end last rnd 1 sc, 1 sl st in each of 3 sts.

BORDER: 

Turn, sk 1^st st, 1 sc in each st working in back loop only [100 sts].

2^nd rnd:  Cont work around, * 1 sc in next st, sk 1 st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 3 tr, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc all in next st [a shell], sk 1 st; rep from *, end rnd with sl st in 1^st sc.

3^rd rnd:  Ch 5, * 1 sl st around post of 2^nd tr in next shell [always work sl st around post from back], ch 2, 1 hdc in next sc, ch 2; rep from *, end 1 sl st in 3^rd st of ch 5.

4^th rnd:  Ch 4, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc all in same st as sl st, * 1 sc in sl st around post of next shell, work a shell in next hdc; rep from *, end last rep 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 tr in same st as 1^st half of shell, join with sl st in top of ch 4.

5^th rnd:  Ch 1, 1 sl st around ch 4, * ch 2, 1 hdc in next sc, ch 2, 1 sl st around post of 2^nd tr of next shell; rep from *, end rnd with sl st in 1^st sl st of rnd.

6^th rnd:  1 Sc in same sl st, * 1 shell in next hdc, 1 sc in next sl st; rep from *, end 1 sl st in 1^st sc.  Fasten off. 

Work 1 rnd sl st around lower edge of border.
