Vintage 1940s Lacy Cartwheel Hat #130

Romantic as a wink,the lacy cartwheel with gay-as-spring prints & summer sheers.

SIZE: 
Medium

MATERIALS: 
Bucilla Strawkraft or Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 6 balls
Steel crochet hook, size 0

GAUGE: 
11 sts = 2“
2 rows = 7/8”

Entire hat is made using 2 strands.

CROWN: 
Ch 5, slip st in first st.  Ch 3, work 14 dc in ring, join with slip st in top of ch 3; 15 sts, always counting ch 3 as 1 st.

2nd rnd:  Ch 4, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * around, end ch 1, join with slip st in 3rd st of ch 4; [30 sts].

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as slip st, * 1 dc in next ch st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from *, end 1 dc in last ch st, join with slip st in top of ch 3; [45 sts].

4th rnd:  Ch 4, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st;
repeat from *, end ch 1, skip 1, join; [60 sts].

5th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as slip st, * 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from *, end 1 dc in each of last 3 sts, join; [75 sts].

6th rnd:  Ch 4, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st, ch 1, 1 dc in next st; repeat from *, end ch 1, skip 1, join; [90 sts].

7th rnd:  Cut 22” of wire, fasten ends securely to form a circle about 6” in diameter.  Ch 1, working over wire, work 1 sc in same st as slip st, 1 sc in each remaining st, slip st in first sc.

8th rnd:  Ch 3, working in back loop, 1 dc in 2nd & each remaining st, join; [90 sts].

9th rnd:  Ch 4, working in both loops, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st, repeat from *, end ch 1, join.

10th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in 2nd & each remaining st, join; [90 sts].

Repeat last 2 rnds once.

BRIM: 
1st rnd:  Ch 3, working in front loop only, 1 dc in each of 2 sts, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st; repeat from * 41 times, 1 dc in each st to end, join; [132 sts].

2nd, 4th, 6th, & 8th rnd:  ch 4, working in both loops, skip 1, 1 dc in next st. * ch 1, skip 1, 1 dc in next st; repeat from *, end ch 1, skip 1, join.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of 4 sts, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * around, join; [154 sts].

5th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * 23 times, 1 dc in each of 4 sts, 2 dc in last st, join;  [180 sts].

7th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of 8 sts, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from * 26 times, 1 dc in each of last 8 sts, join; [208 sts].

9th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in each of 9 sts, 2 dc in next st, * 1 dc in each of 5 sts, 2 dc in next st; repeat from *  30 times,  dc in each of last 11 sts, join; [240 sts].

10th rnd:  Fasten ends of 46” of wire to form a circle about 14 ½” in diameter, ch 1, work 1 sc in each st, working over wire, join.

Final rnd:  ch 3, working in back loop, * skip 2 sts, work 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc ch 1, 1 dc--all in next st, ch 1, skip 2, 1 sc in next st, ch 1; repeat from * around, join with slip st in 2nd st of ch.  Fasten off.

FINISHING: 
Cover wrong side of hat with light coating of hat sizing.

Trim with 1 ½ yards of narrow velvet ribbon as illustrated. 

Sew in headband & elastic.
