Vintage Vogue 1950’s Wool Lace Dress #341 - Knit

Tremendous fashion news in this wool lace dress that is charming for afternoons & informal evenings.  With a stylish ribbed waistband, it can be worn belted or unbelted.  For summer make it in a soft pale colour.  For winter, in navy blue or black…. And button it with pearls or rhinestones.

SIZES;  Directions are for size 36.  Changes for sizes 38, 40, & 42 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Coats & Clark’s Red Heart Super Fingering, Art # 239, 16 [18, 20, 22], 1 oz pull-out skeins
1 Pail each # 1, #2, & #3 Knitting Needles
1 Steel Crochet Hook #5
4 Buttons
½ yd Grosgrain Ribbon 1” wide

GAUGE: 
9 sts = 1”;     12 rows = 1” on #1 needles
8 sts = 1”;     10 rows = 1” on #2 needles
7 sts = 1”;       9 rows = 1” on #3 needles

PATTERN:  Multiple of 8 sts plus 5.
1st row:  K 1, * yo, k 3 tog, yo, k 5, rep from * across, end yo, k 3 tog, yo, k 1.
2nd row & all even rows:  P.
3rd & 5th rows:  Rep 1st row.
7th, 9th & 11th rows:  K 5, * yo, k 3 tog, yo, k 5; rep from * across.
12th row:  P.  Rep these 12 rows for pattern.

BACK: 
Starting at lower edge of skirt with #3 needles, cast on 165 [173, 181, 189] sts. 
P 1 row. 
Change to pattern. 
Work even until 22” from beg or 7” less than desired length to waistline. 
Change to #2 needles. 
Continue to work in pattern until 26” from beg or 3” less than desired length to waistline, end with 6th row.  Change to #1 needles.

WAISTBAND: 
1st row:  P 5, * k 3, p 5; rep from * across.
2nd row:  K 5, * p 3, k 5; rep from * across.
3rd thru 12th rows:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows.
13th row:  P 1, p 2 tog, p 2, * k 3, p 1, p 2 tog, p 2; rep from * across.  144 [151, 158, 165] sts.
14th row:  K 4, * p 3, k 4; rep from * across.
15th row:  P 4, * k 3, p 4; rep from * across.
16th thru 24th rows:  Rep 14th & 15th rows alternately.
25th row:  P 1, p 2 tog, p 1, * k 3, p 1, p 2 tog, p 1; rep from * across.  123 [129, 135, 141] sts.
26th thru 36th rows:  Work in k 3, p 3 ribbing as established.  Mark last row for waistline.
Next row:  Inc 1 st in each p-3 rib.  144 [151, 158, 165] sts.
Change to #2 needles. 
P next row, inc 5 [6, 7, 8] sts evenly spaced across.  149 [157, 165, 173] sts. 
Change to pattern. 
Work even until 6 ½” [6 ¾”, 7”, 7 ¼”] from waistline.

SHAPE SLEEVES: 
Inc 1 st each end every other row 4 times. 
Cast on 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows; then 4 sts at beg of next 10 rows, working inc sts in patt.  205 [213, 221, 229] sts. 
Work even until sleeves are 5 ½” [5 ¾”, 6”, 6 ¼”] from last cast-on sts.

SHAPE SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 5 [6, 7, 8] sts at beg of next 6 rows; then 5 sts at beg of next 26 rows.  Bind off.

FRONT: 
Work as for back until 22” from beg or 7” less than desired length to waist, end on right side. 
Change to #2 needles.

FRONT OPENING: 
P 79 [83, 87, 91] sts & sl these sts on holder for right front, p 7 sts for front border & place these sts on another holder, p to end.

LEFT FRONT: 
Working on rem 79 [83, 87, 91] sts, work in patt until same length as back to waistband, end with 6th row.  Change to #1 needles.

WAISTBAND: 
1st row:  * P 5, k 3; rep from * across, end k 2 [p 3, k 2, p 3].
2nd row:  P 2 [0, 2, 0], k 5 [3, 5, 3], * p 3, k 5; rep from * across.
3rd thru 12th rows:  Rep 1st & 2nd rows:  Dec 1 st in each of p-5 ribs.  69 [73, 76, 80] sts.
14th thru 24th rows:  Cont in ribbing as established.
25th row:  Dec 1 st in each p-4 rib.  59 [63, 65, 69] sts.
26th thru 36th rows:  Cont in ribbing as established.  Mark last row for waistline.
Next row:  Inc 1 st in each p-3 rib across.  69 [73, 76, 80] sts.
Change to #2 needles, p 1 row, inc 4 [4, 5, 5] sts evenly spaced across.  73 [77, 81, 85] sts.  Work in patt.
1st row:  K 1, yo, k 3 tog, yo, * k 5, yo, k 3 tog, yo; rep from * across, end k 5 [1, 5, 1] sts.  Keeping patt as established, work even until 6 ½” [6 ¾”, 7”, 7 ¼”] from waistline.

SHAPE SLEEVE:  At side edge, inc 1 st every other row 4 times.  Cast on 2 sts every other row twice at side edge; then 4 sts every other row 5 times.  101 [105, 109, 113] sts.

SHAPE NECK & SHOULDER: 
At neck edge, dec 1 st every other row 21 [22, 23, 34] times; at the same time, when sleeve is 5 ½” [5 ¾”, 6”, 6 ¼”] from last cast-on sts, at side edge, bind off 5 [6, 7, 8] sts every other row 3 times; then 5 sts every other row 13 times.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Starting beyond center 7 sts, work to correspond to left side, reversing shaping & patt, 1st row of patt above waistline will beg with k 5 [1, 5, 1].  Sew seams.

FRONT BORDER: 
With #1 needles, cast on 11 sts, k 7 sts from holder, cast on 1 st.
1st row [wrong side]:  P.
2nd row:  K 9, sl 1, k 9.  Rep these 2 rows until 1” from beg, end with 1st row.
Next row [buttonhole]:  K 3, bind off next 3 sts, k 3 sts beyond sl st, bind off next 3 sts, work to end.
Next row:  Cast on 3 sts over bound-off sts.  
Work 3 more double buttonholes evenly spaced apart with last one at beg at neck shaping.  
Work to reach around back of neck to 1” below left neck edge, end with p row.
Next row:  Bind off 1st 9 sts.  Work on rem 10 sts to reach to base of opening.  Bind off.

SLEEVE BAND: 
With #1 needles, cast on 15 sts.
1st row:  K 7, sl 1, k 7.
2nd row:  P.  Rep these 2 rows to reach around sleeve edges.  Bind off.

FINISHING: 
Fold border along sl st & sew to front & neck edges. 
Face front edges with grosgrain ribbon.  
Button-hole-st around buttonholes.  
Sew ends of sleeve bands to, fold along sl st & sew to sleeve edges.  
Work 1 row of sc around lower edge of skirt.  
Make casing for elastic at top of ribbing at waistband.  Run elastic thru casing. 
Sew on buttons.
