Free Pattern - Vintage 1960s Three-Piece Suit Jacket Skirt and Sweater Set #156 - Knit

SIZES:  12, 14, 16. 
Directions are for size 12. 
Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Mohair 50 gram balls -- 18 [ 19-20 ] Main Color [ MC ]
Mohair 50 gram balls -- 7 [ 8-9 ] Contrasting Color [ CC ]
1 Pair each knitting needles #3 and #8
1 Steel crochet hook #1                 
1 ½ yds 45” wide lining materials
1 Neck zipper 6 inches long         
¾ yd of 1” wide elastic

GAUGE :
On #8 needles in stockinette st:   
4 sts = 1 inch; 
5 rows = 1 inch

NOTE: 
If necessary, change to larger or smaller needles to maintain correct gauge. 

SKIRT:
NOTE: 
Skirt is planned for 27 in length.  Make necessary adjustment for length before 1st decrease row, and keep a record of the adjustment you make.

BACK: 
With #8 needles and MC cast on 88 [92-96] sts. 

Work even in stockinette st [k 1 row p 1 row] for 12 ins. 

Mark off the center 32 sts and carry the 2 markers up entire length of skirt.

1st dec row:  Dec 1 st each side [2 decs].  Work even until 14 ins from beg.

2nd dec row:  Dec 1 st each side and 1st before each marker [4 decs]. 

Work even until 16 ins from beg.

3rd dec row:  Dec 1 st each side and 1 st after each marker [4 decs]. 

Work even until 17 n½ ins from beg.

4th dec row:  Dec 1 st before and after each marker [4 decs]. 

Work even until 19 ins from beg.
5th dec row:  Same as 4th dec row. 

Continue to dec 1 st before and after each marker every 1 ½ ins once more; then every 1 in 4 times. 

Work even on 50 [54-58] sts until 27 ins from beg.  Bind off.

FRONT: 
Work same as back.

FINISHING: 
Block. 

Sew side seams. 

Working from right side, work 1 row sc around bottom of skirt. 

Working from right side, work 2 rows sc around top of skirt, then work beading for elastic on wrong side. 

Run elastic through beading and sew.

JACKET:
BACK: 
With #8 needles and MC cast on 70 [74-78] sts loosely. 

Work even in stockinette st [k 1 row p 1 row] for 14 ½ [14 ½-15] ins, or desired length to armholes.

Armholes: 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows [once each side]. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times. 

Work even on 56 [60-64] sts until armholes measure 7 ¾ [8-8 ¼] ins.

Shoulders: 
Bind off 5 sts at beg of each of next 4 rows, then 5 [6-7] sts at beg of each of the next 2 rows. 

Bind off remaining 26 [28-30] sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #8 needles and MC cast on 31 [33-35] sts loosely. 

P 1 row, k next row increasing 1 st in last st [front] edge. 

Continue stockinette st increasing 1 st at front edge every row 8 times more. 

Work even on 40 [42-44] sts until 3 ins from cast-on sts. 

Inc 1 st at underarm edge on next row and repeat dec at underarm edge every 3 ins 3 times more. 

Work even on 44 [46-48] sts until same length as back to armhole, ending at armhole edge.

Armhole and Neck: 
Next row:  Bind off 5 [6-7], work to front edge, k 2 tog. 

Continue to dec 1 st at front edge every 4th row 9 times more and At the Same Time dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 6 times. 

Work even on 23 [24-25] sts until armhole measures 7 ¾ [8-8 ¼] ins.

Shoulder: 
Bind off 5 sts from armhole edge twice, then 5 [6-7] sts once. 

Continue working on 8 sts for 2 ½ [2 ¾-3] ins. 

Slip sts to a holder.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to Left Front,  reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES: 
With #8 needles and MC cast on 40 [42-44] sts. 

Working in stockinette st inc 1 st each side every 2 ins 6 times, every 1 ½ ins twice. 

Work even on 56 [58-60] sts until piece measures 16 ½ [16 ½-17] ins from beg, or desired length to underarm.

Cap: 
Bind  off 4 [5-6] sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row for 4 ¼ [4 ½-4 ¾] ins. 

Bind off 2 sts at beg of each of next 6 rows. 

Bind off remaining sts.

TRIMMING--PATTERN STITCH:  Multiple of 3 sts, plus 2: 
Cast on CC loosely.  Always sl st as if to p.

1st row [right side]:  With MC k 2, * sl 1, k 2; repeat from * across row.   End k2.

2nd row:  With MC * bring yarn to front, sl 1, take yarn to back, k 2; repeat from * across row end sl 1, k 1.

3rd row:  With CC k 1, * sl 1, k 2; repeat from * across row.  End sl 1.

4th row:  With CC sl 1, k 2, * bring yarn to front, sl 1, take yarn to back, k 2; repeat from * across row.  End k 1.

5th row:  With MC * sl 1, k 2; repeat from * across row.  End k 1.

6th row:  With MC k 1, * bring yarn to front, sl 1, take yarn to back, k 2; repeat from * across row.  End last repeat k 3, instead k 2.

7th row:  With CC repeat row 1.

8th row:  With CC repeat row 2.

9th row:  With MC repeat row 3.

10th row:  with MC repeat for 4.

With CC bind off.

FRONT BANDS--Make 2: 
With #8 needles and CC cast on 134 [140-146] sts for outside edge of band. 

Work the 10 rows of trimming pattern st. 

Bind off loosely with CC.

Back Band: 
Cast on 68 [71-74] and work same as front bands.

Sleeve Bands--Make 2: 
Cast on 41 [44-47] sts and work same as front bands.

FINISHING: 
Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Weave the two pieces at back of neck tog and sew to neck edge. 

With wrong side of back trimming piece to right side of back and 1 edge of piece at lower edge of back, pin trimming piece to back from underarm seam to underarm seam. 

Pin 1 front band to lower edge of front, up front edge to center back of neck in same way. 

Pin other front band in same way. 

Join front and back bands at seam. 

Join front bands at center back of neck. 

Working from right side with CC, and working through double thickness, work 1 row sl sts loosely through band and jacket; joining outside edge of bands to outside edge of jacket. 

With CC sew top edge of bands to jacket. 

With seam of sleeve bands at seam of sleeves, join bands to sleeve as on jacket. 

Block.  Do not press. 

If desired, cut lining to fit jacket. 

Sew seams. 

Sew to jacket.

BLOUSE:  BACK: 
With #8 needles and Cc cast on 64 [68-72] sts loosely. 

Change to #3 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 ½ ins. 

Change back to #8 needles and working stockinette st, inc 1 st each side every 2 ½ ins 3 times. 

Work even on 70 [74-78] sts until 12 [12 ½-12 ½] ins from beg, or desired length to underarm.

Armholes: 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row 4 times. 

Work even on 54 [58-62] sts until armholes measure 3 ins. 

Divide for back opening. 

Work 27 [29-31] sts, tie in another ball of yarn, work last 27 [29-31] sts. 

Working on both sides at same time with separate balls of yarn until armholes measure 7 ½ [7 ¾-7 ¾] ins.

Shoulders: 
At arm edge bind off 8 [9-10] sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Bind off remaining 11 sts at each side for back of neck.

FRONT: 
Work same as back [omitting opening] until armholes measure 5 ½[5 ½-5 ¾] ins. 

There are 54 [58-62] sts on needle.

Neck: 
Work across 21 [23-25] sts, tie in another ball of yarn, bind off the center 12 sts, work to end. 

Continue working on both sides with separate ball of yarn, decreasing 1 st at each side of neck edge every other row 5 times. 

Shape shoulders as on back when armholes are same length as back armholes

SLEEVES: 
With #8 needles and CC cast on 44 [46-48] sts loosely. 

Change to #3 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 in. 

Change back to #8 needles and working stockinette st, inc 1 st each side every 1 in 3 times. 

Work even on 50 [52-54] sts until 4 ½ ins from beg.

Cap: 
Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row for 4 [ 4 ¼-4 ½] ins. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of each of next 6 rows. 

Bind off remaining sts.

TRIMMING--Make 2 pieces: 
With #8 needles and MC cast on 23 sts. 

Reversing colors, work same as the 10 rows of Jacket Trimming. 

Bind off with MC.

FINISHING: 
Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

Working from right side, work 1 row sc around neck edge and zipper opening, keeping work flat. 

Block.  Do not press. 

Sew in zipper. 

Fold the trimming pieces to form a point at one end and sew. 

With point toward center, pin the longer trimming piece to right side of front 2 ins above lower edge and straight edge at seam. 

Sew to blouse. 

With point toward neck, pin  other piece to left side of front 3 ins below shoulder seam and straight edge at armhole seam. 

Sew to blouse. 

Steam all seams lightly.
