Vintage 1950s Sweater Jacket #155 - Knit


SIZES: 
Small, Medium and Large
Directions are written for size Small [ 32-34 ]. 
Changes for sizes Medium [36-38] and Large [ 40-42 ] are in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
Mohair 1 oz balls - 14 [ 16-17 ]
1 Pair each of knitting needles #8, #9 and #11
#1 Aluminum crochet hook

GAUGE on #11 needles: 
7 sts = 2 inches; 
5 rows = 1 inch

PATTERN STITCH:  multiple of 3 sts:
1st row:  * YO, sl 1 as if to p, k 2 tog; repeat from * to end of row.

2nd row:  * YO, sl 1 as if to p, k the slip st and yo of previous row tog; repeat from * to end. 

Repeat 2nd row for pattern st.

NOTE: 
When binding off or decreasing, always work the yo and sl st as 1 st.  When increasing yo and inc which gives 2 sts increased, always count sts on every row after decreasing or increasing.

BACK: 
With #11 needles cast on 57 [ 66-72 ] sts. 

Work even in patt st until 14 ½ [ 15-15 ] inches from beg, or desired length to underarm.

ARMHOLES: 
Bind off 3 [ 4-5 ] sts at beg of each of next 2 rows [ once on each side ]. 

Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 [ 4-5 ] times. 

Work even on 45 [ 50-52 ] sts until armholes measure 8 [ 8 ½-8 ½ ] inches.

SHOULDERS: 
Bind off 5 sts at beg of each of the next 6 [ 4-4 ] rows, then bind off 0 [ 6-7] sts at beg of each of the next 2 rows. 

Bind off remaining sts for back of neck.

POCKET LININGS: 
Make 2--With #9 needles cast on 20 sts. 

Work even in stockinette st [ k 1 row p 1 row ] for 5 ins.  Slip sts to a stitch holder.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #11 needles, cast on 30 [ 33-36 ] sts. 

Work even in patt st for 5 inches.

Next row:  Beg at underarm edge, work 2 sts, bind off next 20 sts for pocket opening, work to end of row.

Next row:  Work patt to opening. 

With p side of pocket lining facing you, work patt across 20 sts of pocket lining, work patt to end. 

Work even on 30 [ 33-36 ] sts until 8 inches from beg, ending at underarm edge. 

Inc at beg of next row [ as described above ] and repeat inc at underarm edge every 2 inches twice more. 

Work even on 33 [ 36-39 ] sts until same length as back to armholes.

ARMHOLE: 
Bind off 3 [ 4-5 ] sts from armhole edge once. 

Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 5 [ 6-7 ] times. 

Work even on 25 [ 26-27 ] sts until same length as back to shoulder.

SHOULDER: 
Bind off 5 sts from armhole edge 3 [ 2-2 ] times, then bind off 0 [ 6-7 ] sts from armhole edge once. 

Bind off remaining 10 sts.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond to Left Front, reversing all shaping.

SLEEVES: 
With #8 needles, cast on 33 [ 36-39 ] sts. 

Work in ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 2 inches.

Change to #11 needles and work in patt st, increasing each side [ as on front ] every 1 ½ inches 6 times.

Work even on 45 [ 48-51 ] sts until piece measures 13 [ 13 ½-13 ½ ] inches from beg or desired length to underarm.

Cap: 
Bind off 3 [ 4-5 ] sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Bind off 1 st at beg of each of next 24 rows.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows.  Bind off remaining sts.

COLLAR: 
With #11 needles, cast on 64 sts for outside edge of collar. 

Work even in patt for 2 inches. 

Change to #9 needles and continue patt until 4 inches from beg. 

Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of the next 10 rows. 

Bind off remaining 23 sts.

FRONT BINDINGS: 
Make 2 pieces.  With #8 needles cast on 9 sts. 

Work even in stockinette st for 26 [ 27-27 ] inches.  Bind off.

COLLAR BINDING: 
Work same as front binding for 24 inches.  Bind off.

FINISHING:  Pocket borders: 
With #9 needles and working from right side, pick up and k 20 sts across sts of 1 pocket opening. 

Work ribbing of k 1, p 1 for 1 ¼ inches. 

Bind off loosely in ribbing. 

Tack edge of borders to front. 

Sew pocket linings to wrong side fronts. 

Block each piece separately to measurements.  Do not press. 

Sew underarm, shoulder and sleeve seams. 
Set in sleeves. 

With center back of collar at center back of neck and ends of collar 2 inches from front edges, sew collar to neck edge. 

With k side of one front band to right side of jacket pin band up front, across lapel, rounding corner to collar. 

Sew on edge. 

Fold band in half to wrong side and sew other edge of band to wrong side, forming a piped edge. 

Sew band on left front in same way. 

Pin center of collar band at center back of collar, ends of band at neck edge of collar and placed behind front bands. 

Sew both edges of band to collar rounding corners. 

Tack ends of collar band behind front bands. 

Working from wrong side, work 1 row sl sts across lower edge of jacket, working through double thickness of front bands.  Block.  Do not press.
