Vintage 1940s Elegant Envelope Clutch #261


Quick & easy to create, this elegant envelope clutch in a basket-weave stitch will become a season-spanning favorite…you‘ll want to recreate in many colors!

MATERIALS: 
Fleisher’s Superior Knitting Worsted, 2 skeins;
OR
Bear Brand Bucilla Standard Knitting Worsted, 2 skeins
#5 Crochet Hook
Lining Material
10” Zipper

GAUGE: 
14 sts = 3”;    
6 rows = 2”

Approximate Size 16” by 9”.

BAG:
Ch 73.  Work 1 dc in 4th st from hook & in each st on ch [71 dc, counting ch 3]. 

This is wrong side.

PATTERN:  
1ST ROW:  Ch 2, turn, sk first dc, work from back, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts, * work from front, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts, work from back, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts; rep from *, end 1 dc in top of turning ch.

2ND ROW:  Ch 2, turn, sk first dc, work from front, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts; * work from back, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts, work from front, 1 dc around post of each of next 3 sts, rep from *, end 1 dc in top of turning ch.

3RD ROW:  Same as 2nd row. 

Rep these 3 rows for patt [alternating blocks] until 15”, end with 2nd patt row of an odd numbered block from beg.

CUFF [RIGHT SIDE]: 
Ch 1, turn, work 1 sl st in each of first 2 sts, sk a st, * 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts,, sk 1 st; rep from *, end 1 sl st in last st, 1 sl st in top of turning ch [48 sts].  Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in each sl st. 

Work 9 more rows even, end on right side.

TURNING ROW:  Ch 2, turn, 1 dc in back loop of first & each of next 10 sts, * 2 dc in back loop of next st, 1 dc in back loop of each of next 11 sts; rep from * twice, 2 dc in last st [53 sts, counting turning ch]. 

Work 5 rows of patt [6 rows in all].  Fasten off. 

Beg on right side, work cuff on other end to correspond.

TAB: 
Ch 3, join with sl st, work 6 sc in ring.

2ND ROW:  Work 2 sc in each st [12 sts].

3RD ROW:  * 1 Sc in first st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * to end.

4TH ROW:  * 1 Sc in each of 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * to end, sl st in next st.  Fasten off. 

Make another piece in same way.

Crochet both pieces to work 1 sc in each st work thru both thicknesses. 

Make a ch 3” long, work sl st in back thread of each st, fold in half, sew ends to tab, & sew to fastener.

FINISHING: 
Steam lightly. 

Fold bag with cuffs meeting. 

Sew side seams. 

Cut 2 pieces of cardboard each ½” by 10 ½” for cuff. 

Line each piece on both sides & join at ends. 

Line bag, sewing top of lining to cuff, holding in fullness. 

Sew 10” zipper to center top of bag.
