Vintage 1940s Color-Block Two-Piece Dress #180 - Knit 

This elegant two-piece dress is perfect for many occasions, taking you from the office to the cocktail hour! The rich, contrasting colors of red, deep blue & black make this a modern & extremely striking outfit. The slim skirt can be created in the matching solid color of your choice. This is a can't miss combination!

SIZES:
12, 14 and 16. 
Changes for sizes 14 and 16 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:
TOP: 
WOOL FLOSS, 2 Ply, 3 balls [1 oz. balls] each of Cherry Red, Blue Jewel and Black for Sizes 12 and 14; 4 balls of each color for Size 16
1 pair # 2 [2 ¾ mm. size] Knitting Needles
# 2 Bone Crochet Hook                 
1 small black button
Narrow leather belt                         
Shoulder pads.
SKIRT: 
WOOL FLOSS, 2 Ply, 10 balls, Blue Jewel [or other contrasting color of choice}
Pair #9 [5 ¼ mm] Knitting needles
#1 Steel Crochet hook

GAUGE:
TOP: 
7 1/2 sts make 1 inch; 10 rows make 1 inch.
SKIRT: 
5 sts = 1 in; 6 rows = 1 in

SKIRT PATTERN: 
Stockinette stitch [ knit 1 row, purl 1 row] is used throughout.

BLOCKING MEASUREMENTS:: 
Sizes 12 14 16: 
Bust - 2″ 34″ 36″
Width across front or back at underarm - 16″ 17″ 18″
Length from shoulder to lower edge - 18 1/2″ 20″ 21 1/2″
Length of side seam - 12″ 13″ 14″

BACK: 
Starting at lower edge, with Blue, cast on 37 [40, 43] sts.

Drop Blue, attach Black and cast on 40 [42, 44] sts.

Drop Black, attach Cherry and cast on 37 [40, 43] sts.

1st row: Purl with Cherry 37 [40, 43] sts.

Drop Cherry, pick up Black [when changing colors always twist the unused color around the other to prevent making a hole] and purl 40 [42, 44] sts.

Drop Black, pick up Blue and purl 37 [40, 43] sts.

2nd row: With Blue, knit 37 [40, 43] sts.

Drop Blue, pick up Black and knit 40 [42, 44] sts.

Drop Black, pick up Cherry and knit 37 [40, 43] sts.

Repeat the last 2 rows alternately until piece measures ½ inch.

Dec 1 st at both ends of the next row and every 6th row thereafter until there remain 102 [110, 118] sts.

Work without decreasing until piece measures in all 5″ [5 ½″, 6 ½″].

Inc 1 st at both ends of the next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are on needle 120 [128, 136] sts.

Work without increasing until piece measures in all 12″ [13″, 14″].

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Bind off at the beginning of the next 2 rows 6 [6, 7] sts.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 96 [104, 108] sts.

Inc 1 st on the next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are on needle 102 [110, 114] sts. 

[Piece should measure 3 ½ inches from 1st row of armhole shaping].

On the next row, work across next 51 [55, 57] sts. turn.

Work over this set of sts only, increasing 1 st at armhole edge every 6th row until there are on needle 60 [64, 68] sts.

Work straight until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 6 1/2″ [7″, 7 ½″].

TO SHAPE SHOULDER:
Bind off at the beginning of every other row 10 [10, 11] sts. 4 times [once, twice].

Bind off at the beginning of every other row 11 [12] sts — 3 times twice.

Bind off the remaining sts for back of neck..

Attach yarn at base of piece just made and work other side to correspond.

FRONT
Work same as for Back to underarm.

TO SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off at the beginning of the next 2 rows 6 [6, 7] sts.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every other row until there remain 96 [104,108] sts.

Inc 1 st on the next row and every 6th row thereafter until there are on needle 120 [128, 136] sts.

Work without increasing until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending with a p row 6″ [6 ½ ″, 7″].

On next row, work across the first 49 [52, 58] sts.

Bind off for neck the next 22 [24, 20] sts.

Work across the remaining 49 [52, 58] sts.

Work over the last set of sts only, binding off 3 sts at neck edge every other row 3 [3, 4] times.

But, at the Same Time,  when piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending at armhole edge 6 ½ ″ [7″, 7 ¼ ″] shape shoulder as for Back.

Attach yarn to opposite side of neck edge and work other side to correspond.

LEFT POCKET: 
Starting at lower edge with Cherry, cast on 38 sts.

Work straight in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 2 ¼ inches, ending with a purl row.

Bind off 8 sts at beginning of next row, then dec 1 st at decreased edge every other row until 12 sts remain. Bind off.

Make a rnd of sc all around edges, making 3 sc in each corner.

RIGHT POCKET: 
Work as for Left Pocket, using Blue and reversing all shaping.

FINISHING: 
Block all pieces to measurements.

Sew underarm and shoulder seams. 

Make a row of sc around all edges, using matching color yarn.

Sew pockets in place, having lower edges of pockets in line with lower edge of sweater.

Sew in shoulder pads.

Make a ch-6 button loop at top of right center back opening.

Sew button opposite button loop.

Make a ch-6 loop on both sides of waistline, using matching color yarn.

Draw belt through loops.

SKIRT: 
Use Pair #9 [5 ¼ mm] Knitting needles & stockinette st.

BACK OF SKIRT
With thread double, cast on 115 sts. 

Work in stockinette 3 ins and dec 1 st at each end. 
*  Work 2 ½ ins and dec 1 st at each end.  Repeat from * 10 more times.  [91 sts on needle]. 

On next row, k 25 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 26 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 5 more rows and on next row dec 1 st at each end. 

Work 6 rows and on next row dec 1 st at each end. 

On next row, k 22 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 23 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 5 more rows and then dec 1 st at each end. 

On next row k 20 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 21 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 3 more rows, dec 1 st at each end on next row. 

Then work 4 rows and dec 1 st at each end on next row. 

Then k 17 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 18 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Finish with 2 more rows.

FRONT: 
Cast on 130 sts.

 ** Work in stockinette for 2 ins, then dec 1 st at each end. 

* Work 1 ½ ins and dec 1 st at each end.  Repeat from * 3 more times. 

Repeat from ** once.  [110 sts on needle]. 

Dec every 1 ½ ins 8 times [94 sts on needle]. 

Dec every 1 ½ ins 8 times [94 sts on needle]. 

From here on, dec every in for 5 times. 

Work 4 rows and dec, 4 more rows and dec, and finish with 3 rows.

Sew skirt seams, leaving opening of 6 ins at right side. 

Pick up sts along opening and work 5 rows for placket. 

Sew skirt to belting and sew hooks on belting and snap fasteners on placket. 

Turn up hem for desired length.
