Vintage 1940’s Cocktail
Evening Sweater #184 Pattern - Knit

Scotch
Fingering Yarn, 3 Ply [1 oz. skeins]: 9 skeins of Caribou for Sizes 14 and 16;
10 skeins for Size 18

#2 needles, cast on loosely 128 sts [136 sts, 144 sts].
Work
in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2 inches.
Change
to #3 needles and work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece
measures 2 1/2 inches in all.
Dec
1 st at both ends of next row and every 6th row thereafter until there remain
112
sts [120 sts, 128 sts].
Work
without decreasing until piece measures 8 inches in all.
Inc
1 st at both ends of next row and every 9th row [10th row, 11th row] thereafter
until there are on needle 128 sts [136 sts, 144 sts].
Work
without increasing until piece measures in all 17″ [17 1/2″, 18″].
To
Shape Armholes:
Bind
off 9 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Dec
1 st at end of each row until there remain 106 sts [110 sts, 114 sts].
Work
without decreasing until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending
with a purl row 3 1/2″ [4″, 4 1/2″].
Knit
across 53 sts [55 sts, 57 sts].
Turn
and work over this set of sts only, increasing 1 st at armhole edge on next row
and every 5th row thereafter until there are on needle 55 sts [58 sts, 60 sts].
Work
without increasing until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending
with a purl row 7″ [7″, 7 1/2″].
To
Shape Shoulder:
Bind
off 7 sts [9 sts, 9 sts] at beginning of next row and every other row
thereafter until there remain 20 sts [22 sts, 24 sts].
Bind
off remaining sts for back of neck.
Attach
yarn where sts were divided and work opposite side to correspond, reversing
shapings.
FRONT:
Work
exactly as for Back until ribbing measures 2 inches.
Change
to #3 needles and work as follows:
1st
row: Knit
across.
2nd
row: Purl
91 sts [95 sts, 99 sts] place a marker on right hand needle, k 4, place another
marker on right hand needle, purl 33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts].
Work
in stockinette st, keeping the 4 sts between markers in garter st (knit each
row) and making decreases and increases exactly as for Back until piece measures
in all, ending with a knit row 16 1/2″ [17″, 17 1/2″].
There
are on needle 128 sts [136 sts, 144 sts].
Now
work as follows:
1st
row: Purl
33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts] place a marker on right hand needle, knit
58
sts [58 sts, 58 sts] remove marker, k 4, slip other marker, then purl 33 sts
[37 sts, 41 sts].
2nd
row: Knit
across.
3rd
row: Purl
33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts] slip marker, knit 62 sts [62 sts, 62 sts] slip marker,
purl 33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts].
4th
and 5th rows: Repeat
2nd and 3rd rows.
6th
row: Knit
33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts] remove marker, knit 58 sts [58 sts, 58 sts] place a
marker on right hand needle, k 4, slip marker, knit 33 sts [37 sts, 41 sts].
Continue
as for Back,
keeping the 4 sts between markers in garter st and working until piece measures
from 1st row of armhole shaping (omitting opening), ending with a knit row 5″
[5″,5 1/2″].
There
are on needle 116 sts [120 sts, 110 sts].
To
Shape Neck:
Purl
20 sts [19sts, 17sts], knit 4 sts, purl 21 sts [25sts, 29sts].
Bind
off 20 sts; purl 45 sts [48sts, 50sts].
Work
over the last set of sts only, binding off 2 sts at neck edge each purl row
until there remain 35 sts [36 sts, 36 sts].
Work
without decreasing until piece measures from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending
at armhole edge 7″ [7″, 7 1/2″].
To
Shape Shoulder:
Bind
off at beginning of next row and every other row thereafter 7 sts [9 sts, 9
sts] until all sts are bound off.
Attach
yarn to opposite side of neck edge and work other side to correspond, reversing
shapings and keeping sts between markers in garter st.
SLEEVES:
Starting
at lower edge with No. 3 needles, cast on loosely 54 sts [56 sts, 58 sts].
Work
in stockinette st for 1 inch.
Inc
1 st at both ends of next row and every 7th row thereafter until there are on
needle 98 sts [98 sts, 102 sts].
Work
without increasing until piece measures in all 17 1/2″ [18″, 18″].
To
Shape Top:
Bind
off 9 sts at beginning of next 2 rows.
Dec
1 st at end of every row until there remain 44 sts [44 sts, 46 sts].
Dec
1 st at both ends of each row until 22 sts remain. Bind off.
CUFF:
With
No. 3 needles, cast on 54 sts [56 sts, 58 sts].
1st
row: Knit
across.
2nd
row: P
3, k 4, purl across to last 7 sts, k 4, p 3.
3rd
row: Knit
across, increasing 1 st at both ends of row.
Repeat
the last 2 rows until there are on needle 68 sts [70 sts, 72 sts].
Now
work as follows:

3, knit across to last 3 sts, p 3.
2nd
row: Knit
across, increasing 1 st at both ends of row.
3rd
to 6th rows incl: Repeat
1st and 2nd rows alternately.
7th
row: Purl across.
8th
row: Repeat
2nd row.
9th,
10th and 11th rows: Purl
across.
12th
row: Knit
across, decreasing 1 st at both ends of row.
13th
row: Purl
across.
Repeat
last 2 rows alternately until there remain 49 sts [51 sts, 52 sts]. Bind off loosely.
FINISHING:
Block
pieces to measurements.
Sew
up shoulder and underarm seams.
Sew
up sleeve seams and sew in sleeves.
Fold
collar at ridge and sew edges to neck edge.
Finish
sleeves in same way.
Embroider
with gold beads.
Work
a row of sc along back opening, making three ch-5 button loops spaced evenly on
right side.
Sew
on buttons to correspond.
