Free Pattern - Vintage 1946 “Head-Turner” Knit Raglan Jacket #988

Vintage 1946 “Head-Turner” Knit Raglan Jacket #988

Eyes will follow you with admiration wearing this to complete your gay ensemble.  Raglan jacket, long sleeved, long waisted for smartness…jewel neckline to double the smartness with an accessory of scarf or jewelry…and style.

SIZE:
14 to 16 & 18 to 20.
Directions are 14 to 16, with changes for 18 to 20 in brackets.

MATERIAL:
Columbia Sports Yarn 2 oz: 6 [7] balls
Pair standard knitting needles #3 – 14”
Pair standard knitting needles #10– 14”
Crochet hook #3
Snap Fasteners

GAUGE:
5 sts = 1”
Pattern st on #3 needles

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust:  32”-34” [36”-38”]
Waist:  26 ½”-28” [30”-32”]
Hips:  35”-37” [39”-41”]

PATTERN STITCH:  MOSS STITCH:
[K 1, p 1, on uneven # of sts.]

With #10 needles & 3 strands of yarn [used tog as 1 strand] cast on sts.

1ST & 2ND ROWS:  [With 3 strands & #10 needles], work in moss st, then drop 2 strands, but do not break yarn.

3RD TO 8TH ROWS: With single strand of yarn & #3 needles work in moss st.
Rep these 8 rows for patt st.

BACK:
Cast on 77 [83] sts.

Work even in patt st for 1”.

Dec 1 st each side, then dec 1 st each side every 4th row 7 times more [be careful to keep moss st patt even].
Sts on needle – 61 [67] sts.

Work even for 2”.

Inc 1 st each side, then inc 1 st each side every 4th row 13 times.
Sts on needle – 89 [95] sts.

When work meas 15” [16”] from start:

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLES:
Dec 1 st each side every other row 35 [37] times, then bind off rem 19 [21] sts for back of neck.

RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 45 [49] sts.

Dec 1 st at side edge every 6th row 6 times.
Sts on needle – 39 [43] sts.

Work even for 2”.

Inc 1 st at side edge, then inc 1 st at same edge every 4th row 15 times more.
Sts on needle – 55 [59] sts.

When front meas same as back to underarm:

SHAPE RAGLAN ARMHOLE:
Dec 1 st at armhole edge every other row 35 [37] times, at the same time, when there are 28 sts on needle.

SHAPE NECK: 
Bind off 13 sts at front edge, cont decs at armhole edge & dec 1 st at neck edge every other row until all sts are worked off.

LEFT FRONT:
Work to correspond.

SLEEVES:
Cast on 39 sts.

Work even for 3”.

Inc 1 st each side, then inc 1 st each side every ½” 15 [17] times.
Sts on needle – 71 [75] sts.

When sleeve meas 17” from start, or desired length to underarm, dec 1 st each side every other row until all sts are worked off.

FINISHING:
Sew sleeve seams, & underarm seams.  

Sew sleeves in place.

CROCHETED BORDER:
Always starting at lower corner of right front -- on right side of work -- work 5 rows of sc up right front, around neck, – inc at corners to keep flat – down left front, working in back lp of each st.

Work 1 row of sc across lower edge of jacket & sleeve edge.

Fasten with snap fasteners.
