Vintage 1960s Knit Raglan Coat #189

SIZES:  8, with changes for 10, 12, and 14 in brackets.

MATERIALS: 
76 [76, 80, 80] oz of 4-ply knitting worsted weight.
1 Pair #10 Knitting needles
#G Crochet hook

GAUGE: 
2 Strands of yarn used throughout: 
7 sts = 2 ins; 
9 rows = 2 ins

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS IN INCHES:
Bustline - 38 [39, 41, 44]
Back at underarm - 19 [19 ½, 20 ½, 22]
Each front - 14 [14 ½, 15, 15 ½]
Sleeves at underarm - 15 ½ [16, 16 ¾, 17 ½]

BACK: 
Cast on 81 [83, 87, 91] sts for lower edge. 

Work even in garter st [k each row] for 19 rows -- about 3 ½ ins.

Next row:  Wrong side, P each st

Next row:  K in back lp of each st --for twisted stockinette st.

Repeat last 2 rows until 5 rows above garter st border, end with p row.

NOTE:  Work in twisted stockinette st throughout.

Dec row:  K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to 3 sts from end, k 2 tog, k 1. 

Dec 1 st each side every 12th row 6 times more --67 [69, 73, 77] sts. 

Work 9 rows even, end after a p row.

ARMHOLE: 
Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

RAGLAN SHAPING
Rep dec row in next row and every 2nd row 21 [22, 23, 24] times more until 17 [17, 19, 21] sts remain. 

P 1 row. 

Bind off remaining sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Cast on 50 [51, 53, 55] sts. 

Work in garter st for 19 rows.

Next row:  K in back of each st to marker, k to end for garter st border.  

Rep last 2 rows until 5 rows above border, end after a p row. 

NOTE:  Keep garter st border throughout.

Dec row:  K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k in twisted stockinette st to marker, k to end. 

Dec 1 st at side edge every 12th row 6 times more --43 [44, 46, 48] sts. 

Work across 9 rows even, end with p row.

ARMHOLE: 
Bind off 3e sts at beg of next row.

RAGLAN SHAPING: 
Rep dec row in next row and in every 2nd row 16 [17, 18, 18] times more, end with k row --23 [23, 24, 26] sts.

NECK SHAPING: 
Bind off 11 [11, 12, 12] sts at beg of next row, k to marker, p to end.

NEXT ROW [dec row]:  K 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k in twisted stockinette st to marker, k to 2 sts from end, k 2 tog. 

Rep last dec row every 2nd row 4 [4, 4, 5] times more, dropping marker and discontinuing border when all border sts are dec --2 sts. 

P 1 row.  Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work same as left front until 19 rows from beg. 

Next row:  P to last 16 sts, place a marker on needle, k to end. 

Next row:  K to marker, k in twisted stockinette st to end. 

Work even in patt until 5 rows above border, end with p row.

Next row:  K 8 sts, bind off 3 sts for buttonhole, k to marker, k in twisted stockinette st to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1.

Next row:  P to marker, k to buttonhole, cast on 3 sts, k to end. 

Dec 1 st at side edge every 12th row 6 times more. 

AT SAME TIME, work buttonholes every 24th row 3 times more. 

Finish to correspond to left front, reversing placement of shaping.

SLEEVES: 
Cast on 41 [43, 45, 47] sts. 

Work in garter st for 19 rows. 

P 1 row. 

Next row:  K in twisted stockinette st.

P 1 row.

NOTE:  Work in twisted stockinette st throughout.

Inc row:  K 1, inc 1 st in next st, k to 3 sts from end, inc 1 st in next st, k 2.

Inc 1 st each side every 6th row 6 times more -- 55 [57, 59, 61] sts. 

Work even, until desired length to underarm, end with p row. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Dec 1 st each side as for back in next row and every 2nd row 21 [22, 23, 24] times more --5 sts. 

P 1 row.  Bind off.

POCKET: 
Cast on 31 sts. 

Work in twisted stockinette st for 6 ins. 

Work in garter st for 9 rows.  Bind off. 

Make second pocket, if desired, for left front.

COLLAR: 
Cast on 57 [57, 61, 61] sts. 

Working in garter st, work 15 rows even. 

Bind off 10 sts at beg of next 4 rows. 

Bind off remaining 17 [17, 21, 21] sts.

FINISHING: 
Weave raglan seams. 

Weave side and sleeve seams. 

Sew on collar, having side edges of collar end of bound-off sts of lapel.

EDGING: 
Right side facing, with care to keep work flat, sc along right front from lower edge to point where lapel folds back.  Fasten off. 

Work along left front edge in same manner, beg at fold of lapel. 

With right sides of lapel and collar facing, sc around lapel and collar edges.  Fasten off. 

Sew on pockets as illustrated. 

Work blanket st around buttonholes.  Block.
