Vintage 1947 Classic Hat & Clutch Set #241


Quick & easy to create, this classic two-tone hat & handbag duo
will become a seasonal favorite!

MATERIALS: 
HAT: 
Dritz Belastraw Art #110, 3 tubes
Dritz Metallic Yarn Art #114, 2 tubes
BAG: 
Dritz Belastraw Art #110, 2 tubes
Dritz Metallic Yarn Art #114, 2 tubes
#1 Steel Crochet Hook
Dritz Lining #201 or #805 for Handbag
            [Instructions are included to create your own lining.]
Dritz Ornamental Zipper Pull

GAUGE: 
HAT: 
5 sc = 1”;  
BAG: 
2 shells = 1 ½”

HAT:  CROWN: 
Ch 2.

1ST RND:  7 Sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Mark last st of each rnd.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each sc [14 sc].

3RD RND:  * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc [inc].  Rep from * [21 sc].

4TH RND:  Sc in each sc in as necessary to keep work flat [about 7 sc]. 

Rep 4th rnd until there are 98 sc on rnd & piece meas about 6” across. 

Work straight until piece meas 5 ½” from start.

BRIM: 
1ST RND:  Ch 2, * dc in 4 sc, 2 dc in next sc.  Rep from * [117 dc].  Join with sl st in top of 1st dc.
2ND RND:  Ch 1, sc in same place as sl st, * ch 2, dc in same place as sc, dc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc.  Rep from * join last shell with sl st in 1st sc [39 shells].  End off, turn.

3RD RND:  Attach Metallic Yarn [MY] in 1st ch-2 sp of last rnd, ch 1, in same place where yarn was attached make sc, ch 3 & 4 dc, * in next ch-2 sp make sc, ch 3 & 4 dc.  Rep from *.  Join [39 shells].  End off, turn.

4TH RND:  Attach Belastraw [BS] in 1st ch-3 sp of last rnd, ch 1, in same place where yarn was attached make sc, ch 2 & 3 dc, * in next ch-3 sp make sc, ch 2 & 3 dc.  Rep from * [39 shells].  End off, turn.

5TH & 6TH RNDS:  Rep 3rd & 4th rnds.

7TH TO 12TH RNDS:  Work as before, only, having 1 more dc in each shell on each rnd.

Turn up brim in front.

CLUTCH: 
Ch 59 to meas about 10 ½”.

1ST RND:  In 2nd ch from hook make sc, ch 2, & 3 dc, 8 sc in next ch, ch 2, dc in next 3 ch.  Rep from * across; in last ch make sc, ch 2 & 3 dc. 

Work along other side of start ch, make ** sc in base of next dc, ch 2, dc in base of next 2 dc, dc in base of next sc.  Rep from **.  Join with sl st in 1st sc [30 shells].  End off, turn.

2ND RND:  Attach MY in 1st ch-2 sp of last rnd, ch 1, in same place where yarn was attached make sc, ch 2 & 4 dc, * in next ch-2 sp make sc, ch 2 & 4 dc.  Rep from * [30 shells].  End off, turn.

3RD RND:  Attach BS in 1st ch-2 sp of last rnd, ch 1, in same place where yarn was attached make sc, ch 2 & 3 dc, * in next ch-2 sp make sc, ch 2 & 3 dc.  Rep from * [30 shells].  End off, turn.

Rep 2nd & 3rd rnds alternately 9 more times; then rep 2nd rnd once more.  End off. 

Piece should be about 8 ½” deep.

Mount on Dritz Bag Lining.  [If purchased lining is unavailable, use the following instructions.]

LINING:
Make paper patt for each crocheted piece & lay aside to be used later.

Cut lining according to paper patts & sew tog. 

Shirr lining bag form to correspond with crocheted bag.

Insert finished lining in bag. 

Sew in zipper.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.

Attach Dritz Ornamental Zipper Pull with a chain of Metallic Yarn.
