Vintage 1945 Fancy Hat & Clutch Set #1068

MATERIALS: 
BAG:
Hiawatha Belastraw Art #35, 4 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Twist Rayon Cord Art #41, 4 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Crepe Corde Art #42, 4 tubes
Steel Crochet Hook #0 or Bone Crochet Hook #3
Hiawatha Lucite Pull #6241
10” Talon Slide Fastener [zipper] Style #148
Lining Material & Buckram

HAT:
Hiawatha Belastraw Art #35, 2 tubes
OR
Hiawatha Super Rayon Cord Art #41, 2 tubes
Steel Crochet Hook #0 or Bone Crochet Hook #3
If desired, a small amount of netting in matching color will add extra fascination.

BAG:
SIDE [MAKE 2]:
Make 15” chain.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 4th ch from hk, * dc in next ch, sc in next ch.  Rep from * across until row meas 11 ½”, ending with sc.  Cut off rem chain.  Ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW:  * Sc in dc, dc in sc.  Rep from * across, ending with sc in top of ch-3.  Ch 3, turn.

Rep 2nd row until piece meas 7”.  Ch 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  Work sc in each st across.

FOLLOWING ROW:  Sc in front lp only of each st across top [top of bag will be worked in back lps later], 3 sc in corner, then work sc along side & bottom edges, making 3 sc in each corner & having same number of sts along parallel ends.  Work 3 sc in 4th corner, join with sl st to 1st sc.

BORDER:
Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 2, [yo, insert hk in same place as sc & draw lp thru to height of ch-2] 6 times; yo & draw thru all lps on hk, ch 1 [puff st made], sk 3 sc sc in next st.  Rep from * around sk 1 sc instead of 3 at corners.  Join; fasten off.

Attach thread at top of bag [behind border] &, working in back lps of designated sts, work sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.

Work 2 rows of patt & 1 row of sc; fasten off.

GUSSET:
Make 2” chain.

Work in patt until gusset is long enough to go around 2 short sides & 1 long side of bag.  Fasten off.

FINISHING:
Cut linings & interlining, using crochet pieces as patt.

Make bag lining [with slide fastener], inserting cardboards [or stiff plastic] in gussets & sides.

Sew crocheted gusset in place along sides & bottom of bag, inside of puff st border.

Insert lining in crocheted bag, tack along all seams.

Sew ends of top pieces to ends of gusset & along sides of slide fastener.

Make 3” chain & attach pull to slide fastener tab.


HAT:
CENTER: 
Ch 4, join with st st into ring.

1st rnd:  9 Sc in ring.  Do not join.

2nd rnd:  2 Sc in each st [18 sts].

3rd rnd:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around.

4th rnd:  Sc in next st, * 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts.  Rep from * around [36 sts]. 

Work sc in each sc until there are 9 rnds.  Sl st in next st.

10th rnd:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 2, [thread over, insert hook in same place as sc & draw loop thru to height of ch-2] 6 times;  thread over & draw thru all loops on hook, ch 1 - puff st made - sk 2 sc, sc in next st.  Rep from * around.  Join with sl st to 1st sc. 

11th rnd:  Ch 1, * work 3 sc over the ch-2, sc in puff st.  Rep from * around
[48 sts].

12th rnd:  Same as 10th rnd [16 puff sts].

13th rnd:  Sc in sc, * [2 sc over next ch-2] twice; sc in next puff st.  Rep from * around [41 sts].

14th rnd:  * Dc in next st, sc in next st.  Rep from * around.  Do not join.

Next 2 rnds:  Inc 12 sts in rnd by working dc, sc & dc in 6 scs evenly around. 

Work 2 rnds in patt, then work 3 rnds of sc [65 sts]. 

Piece should be 5” in diameter.  Sl st in next st.  Turn. 

CUFF: 
1st rnd:  From right side, work sc around each sc of prev rnd, [to work around sc, insert hook from right to wrong side bet 2 sts, then bring it thru to right side again bet next 2 sts, draw loop thru & complete sc as usual]. 

Work in patt [sc & dc] for 1”.  Sl st in next st.

Next rnd:  Same as 10th rnd [22 puff sts].

Following rnd:  Ch 1, * work 2 sc over the ch-2, sc in puff st.  Rep from * around.

Next rnd:  Same as 10th rnd.  Join; fasten off.

BRIM: 
Working from right side, attach thread to last rnd of Center [before turn for cuff]. 

1st rnd:  Sc, inc in every 4th st around [81 sts]. 

Work in patt for 1”.

Next rnd:  Work sc around, dec 1 st.  Sl st in next st.

Following rnd:  Sc in same place as sl st, * ch 2, puff st in same place as sc, sk 2 sc, sc in next st, ch 2, puff st in same place as sc, sk 1 sc, sc in next st.  Rep from *around.  Join; fasten off.

NOTE: 
To make this ‘Fascinator’ extra special, add a veil of net, lace or dotted-swiss in a matching color. 

Experimenting with fabrics & color combinations will make this your own original creation!
