Vintage 1934 Ridge
Knitted Sweater #538
Quick & easy to
knit this charming sweater blouse in a ridged pattern…smart & stylish lines…season-spanning,
wardrobe favorite…perfect for many occasions!

MATERIALS:
J
& P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 7 balls Red, 1 ball Burnt Navy

Pair each of #1 [2 ½ mm] & #4 [3 ½ mm] Knitting Needles

Steel Crochet Hook

Red Button ½” diameter
GAUGE:
7
sts = 1”;
8
rows = 1”.
The
entire sweater is worked with 2 strands of cotton.
BACK:
With
Red & #4 needles, cast on 90 sts.
Change
to #1 needles & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3 ½”.
Change
to #4 needles & k 1 row, inc 1 st in 5th st & then every 9th
st [100 sts on needle].

2ND ROW: P across.
3RD
& 4TH ROWS: K
across.
Rep
from *, make inc at both ends of every 5th row, which will be 1st
of k rows.
Cont
working with incs until there are 122 sts on needle & piece meas approx 11 ½”
from beg. [Patt alternates 3 rows of st
st & 3 rows of p, giving striped
effect.] There should be 21 stripes when
there are 122 sts on needle.
Work
2 rows in patt, bind off 7 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at beg of
next 12 rows [96 sts], end with 2 k rows.
RIGHT
UPPER BACK:
Work
over 48 sts, cont decs at armhole, & work other edge even, until there are
38 sts across.
Then
dec at armhole on every row for 3 times.
* From armhole bind off 4 sts, work
across.
At
end of next row, dec 1 st. Rep from * 3
more times.
Work
2 rows even & bind off last 15 sts.
Work
other side to correspond.
FRONT:
Cast
on 96 sts as for back, & work in ribbing for 3 ½”.
Change
to #4 needles & bind off 4 sts at beg of row. K across, inc 1 st in 3rd &
every 9th st [102 sts].
2ND
ROW: Bind off 4 sts, p across.
3RD
ROW: K across.
4TH
ROW: Attach Navy & k across, dec 1
st at both ends.
P
next row.
Drop
Navy & with Red, k 2 rows, dec 1 st at both ends of last k row.
P
next row.
Rep
from 3rd row until there are 28 sts across.
P
next row, bind off on next row by k 2 sts tog.
LEFT
SIDE FRONT:
With
Red & #4, cast on 84 sts & work in patt for 6 rows.
On
7th row bind off 4 sts.
Dec
1 st at both ends of 10th row & every 3rd row
thereafter for 4 more times.
Dec
on every other row for 6 times, then every row for 8 times.

At neck edge bind off 2 sts & on next row dec 1 st at both ends. Rep from * 2 more times.
Then
bind off 3 sts at beg of every row, make dec at end of rows for 6 rows.
Bind
off on next row.
RIGHT
SIDE FRONT:
Work
to correspond, bind off 4 sts on 6th row instead of 7th
row.
SLEEVE:
With
Red cast on 32 sts & work in patt, one edge to be even, & inc 1 st
every other row on other edge starting on 5th row, until there are
47 sts across.
Cast
on 24 sts on next row [uneven edge] & work even for 8 rows.
Dec
1 st every other row for 2 times, work even for 17 rows, inc 1 st every other
row 2 times, work even for 7 rows, bind off 24 sts next row, then dec every
other row until 32 sts are left.
Work
even for 6 rows, bind off.
CUFF:
With
Red, cast on 70 sts & work in patt of 5 rows for each stripe for 5
stripes. Bind off.
COLLAR:
With
Red, cast on 100 sts & k in st st for 3 ½”, bind off.
FINISHING:
Sew
straight edge of side fronts to center front, with st st stripes coming
first.
Sew
underarm seams, & work 1 rows of sc around shoulder & armhole.
Work
1 row of sc around armhole of sleeve.
Join
cuffs, so that 3 purled stripes are on right side.
Join
collar so that p side will roll down on right side.
Make
loop for button to fasten sweater at back of neck.
