Vintage 1952 Miss Iowa Doll #610 - Crochet

A clever woman very quickly & easily will create this exquisite doll in a delightful jacket, skirt, matching hat, petticoat & panties…which will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS:
J & P COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, Art #A64, 2 balls White & 1 ball each Red & Yellow
#7 Steel Crochet Hook
½ yd Bright Green Ribbon, ½” wide with picot edges
1 card Grey Rick-Rack, size 13
Doll 11” tall; waist 5 ½”
4 Small Hooks & Eyes
Bias Binding
Small Silk Flowers

ABBREVIATIONS:                                      
CH      =          Chain                                    
DC      =          Double Crochet

SKIRT: 
Start at waist with White, make ch long enough to reach loosely around doll's waist.

1st row:  Dc in 4th ch from hk, 2 dc in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

2nd & 3rd rows:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.  At end of

3rd row, ch 4 to turn.

4th row:  Tr in 1st dc, 2 tr in each dc & in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

5th, 6th & 7th rows:  Sk 1st  tr, tr in each tr, tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

8th row:  Sk 1st  tr, * 2 tr in next tr, tr in next tr.  Rep from * across, tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

9th row:  Rep 5th  row.

10th row:  Rep 8th  row.  Break off, do not turn.

11th row:  Attach Red to top of starting ch at beg of row, sc in same place, sc in back lp of each st across.  Break off, do not turn.

12th row:  Attach White to back lp of 1st  sc, ch 3, dc in back lp of each sc across.  Break off, do not turn.

13th thru 20th rows: Rep 11th  & 12th  rows alternately 4 more times. 

Do not break off at end of 20th  row.  Ch 3, turn.

21st thru 26th rows: Sk 1st  dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

Break off at end of 26th row. 

Sew up back seam, leave 1” opening at top. 

Attach thread to 1st  ch on top & sc closely across.  Break off. 

Sew hook & eye to skirt.

JACKET: 
Skirt
Start at waist with White, ch 30.

1st row:  Dc in 4th  ch from hk & in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

2nd, 3rd 4th rows:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

5th row:  Dc in 1st  dc, * dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * across.  Ch 3, turn.

6th & 7th rows:  Rep 2nd  row.

8th row:  Repeat 5th  row.

9th & 10th rows:  Rep 2nd  row.

11th row:  Rep 5th  row.  Break off.

BODICE: 
Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch on Skirt of Jacket, ch 3, dc in each ch across.  Ch 3, turn.

2nd & 3rd rows:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in next 3 dc, * 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc.  Rep from * across, end with dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

4th row:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

5th row:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in next 7 dc (for one front).  Ch 3, turn.

6th & 7th rows:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn. 

At end of 7th row, ch 1 to turn.

8th row:  Sc in 1st  dc, hdc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc.  Break off. 

Attach thread to last complete row on Bodice & complete other front to correspond.

BACK OF BODICE: 
1st row:  Leave 5 dc free for underarm on last complete row of Bodice, attach thread to next dc, ch 3, dc in each dc across to within last 5 dc.  Ch 3, turn.

2nd & 3rd rows:  Sk 1st  dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn. 

At end of 3rd row, ch 1 to turn. 

4th row:  Sl st in first 2 dc, sc in next 2 dc, hdc in next dc, dc in each dc across to within last 4 sts, hdc in next dc, sc in next dc, sl st in next dc & in top of turning chain.  Break off. 

Sew up seams.

SLEEVES: 
1st rnd:  Attach thread to underarm, ch 3, make 23 dc evenly around.  Join.

2nd  3rd & 4th rnds:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join.

5th rnd:  Dec 4 dc evenly around [to dec 1 dc, work off 2 dc as 1 dc].

6th thru 10th rnds:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join.  Break off.

CUFF:  (Make 2): 
With White, ch 20.

1st row:  2 Dc in 4th  ch from hk, * dc in next 2 ch, 2 dc in next ch.  Rep from * across.  Break off.

2nd row:  Attach Red at base of 1st dc, 3 sc over bar of same dc, 3 sc in back lp of same dc, sc in back lp of each dc across, 3 sc in last st, 3 sc over bar of same st.  Break off.

3rd row:  Attach White to 1st sc, sc in back lp of each sc across, make 3 sc in center sc of each 3-sc group.  Break off.

4th row:  Attach Red & rep last row. 

Sew cuffs around sleeves.

Attach White to bottom at front edge, sc closely across front, around neck & across other side of front.  Break off.

JACKET TRIM: 
1st rnd:  Attach Red to 1st sc on right front, sc in back lp of each sc across to within last 5 sc, ch 100 (to be sewn later), sk 5 sc on other side of front, sc in back lp of each sc across, 3 sc in corner, sc in back lp of next 45 dc, ch 62, sk 8 dc, sc in back lp of each dc to within last 53 dc, ch 62, sk 8 dc, sc in each rem dc across bottom.  Join & break off.

2nd rnd:  Attach White to 1st sc at neck edge of left front, ch 3, dc in back lp of each st around entire Jacket to other side of neck, make 3 dc in center sc at each corner.  Break off.

3rd rnd:  Attach Red to top of starting ch & sc in back lp of each dc around, make 3 sc in center dc of each 3-dc group.  Break off.

Sew loose chs in place to form points around neck & into point with frog on each side. 

Sew 3 small hooks & eyes in place on Bodice. 

Sew rick-rack around skirt bet Red & White stripes, around outer edge of jacket & cuffs.

HAT: 
Start at center with Yellow, ch 2.

1st rnd:  6 Sc in 2nd ch from hk.

2nd rnd: 2 Sc in each sc around.  Join.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each sc around.  Join.

4th rnd:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, 2 dc in each dc around.  Join.

5th rnd:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc.  Rep from * around.  Join.

6th rnd:  Ch 3, dc in back lp of each dc around.  Join.

7th rnd:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join

BRIM: 
1st rnd:  Sc in front lp of each dc around.  Join.

2nd rnd:  Ch 3, dc in same place as sl st, * dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc.  Rep from * around.  Join.

3rd & 4th rnds:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join.

5th  6th & 7th rnds:  * Ch 3, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc.  Rep from * around.  Join.

8th rnd:  Sc in same place as sl st, * sk 2 sc, 6 dc in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc.  Rep from * around.  Join & break off. 

Starch lightly & press. 

Place ribbon around crown & draw ends thru 2nd rnd of brim, leave 12 dc free bet ends. 

Sew some flowers to top of hat & some to ribbon under brim. 

Place rem flowers in hand.

PETTICOAT: 
Cut strip of 6“ crinoline hemline binding 18” long. 

Gather across 1 long side to fit around doll's waist. 

Sew back seam, leave 1“ opening at top. 

Sew bias binding around top. 

Sew hook & eye at back. 

Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.

PANTIES: 
Start at waist make ch long enough to reach around widest part of doll.  Join, be careful not to twist.

1st thru 4th rnds:  Ch 3, dc in each st around.  Join.

FOR 11“ DOLLS WORK 9 RNDS (INSTEAD OF 4 RNDS). 

Ch 4 for crotch & sl st directly opposite.  Break off. 

Draw cord thru sts of 1st rnd.
