Vintage 1950s Miss Ireland Doll #578 - Crochet

A clever woman will very quickly & easily, crochet this exquisite doll with matching hat, parasol, & panties…lovely shamrocks decorate her skirt…which will become a personal favorite to keep or gift to that special person!

MATERIALS:
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Art #A64, 2 balls of Hunters Green,
J. & P. Coats Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, Art. #B4, Size 30, 1 ball each of White & Bright Nile Green
#7 & #10 Steel Crochet Hooks
Doll, 11” tall, chest 5 ½“
Snap Fasteners
Hook & Eye
2 Pipe Cleaners
2 Small Buttons
White Feather
Narrow Green Ribbon

ABBREVIATIONS:

DRESS: 
SKIRT: 
Start at top with Hunter's Green & #7 hk, ch 45.

1ST ROW:  2 Tr in 4th ch from hk, 3 tr in each of next 11 ch, tr in next 18 ch, 3 tr in each of next 12 ch.  Ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  Tr in 1st tr, 2 tr in next 35 tr, tr in next 18 tr, 2 tr in each rem tr, 2 tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.
3RD THRU 9TH ROWS:  Sk 1st tr, tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning chain. Ch 4, turn.

10TH ROW:  Sk 1st tr, tr in next tr, [hold back on hk last lp of each tr, make tr in next 2 tr, yo & draw thru all lps on hk--1 tr dec] 35 times; tr in next 18 tr, dec 36 tr, end with last tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

11TH THRU 14TH ROWS:  Sk 1st tr, tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

15TH ROW:  Skip 1st tr, tr in next 24 tr, dc in next 10 tr, sc in next 20 tr, dc in next 10 tr, tr in each rem tr.  Ch 4, turn.

16TH ROW:  Sk 1st tr, tr in each tr, dc in each dc & sc in each sc across.  Break off.

RUFFLE: 
1ST ROW:  Using #10 hk, attach Bright Nile Green to 1st tr, ch 4, 2 tr in same tr, 3 tr in each st across, 3 tr in top of turning ch.  Ch 4, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk 1st tr, tr in each tr across, tr in top of turning ch.  Break off. 

Sew back seam.

BODICE: 
Start at sleeve edge with Hunters Green & #7 hk, ch 18.

1ST ROW:  Dc in 4th ch from hk & in each ch across, inc 3 dc evenly across. Ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, inc 3 dc evenly across, dc in top of turning ch. Ch 3, turn.

3RD THRU 7TH ROWS:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across & in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.  At end of 7th row, ch 8 to turn.

Attach separate piece of thread to opposite end of row, ch 6.  Break off.

8TH ROW:  Pick up main thread, dc in 4th ch from hk, dc in each ch across, dc in each dc, dc in top of turning ch & in each rem ch across. Ch 3, turn.

9TH, 10TH & 11TH ROWS:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

12TH ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in next 15 dc for back.  Ch 3, turn.

13TH ROW:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch. Break off.

Sew up underarm & sleeve seams. 

Make another piece same way. 

Start at waist, sew up front, joining first 10 dc. 

Sew Bodice to Skirt. 

Sew snap fasteners to back.

CUFF: 
1ST RND:  Attach Bright Nile Green to side of sleeve, ch 3, dc in each ch around.  Join.

2ND RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join.

3RD RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around, do not join. Ch 3, turn.

4TH RND:  Sk 1st dc, dc in each dc around, dc in top of turning ch.  Break off.

Complete other sleeve same way. 
                                                                
Sew button to each cuff.

With Bright Nile Green make ch long enough to reach from back of neck around front to waist, half dc in 3rd ch from hk & in each ch across.  Break off. 

Make another piece same way. 

Sew to Bodice.

LACE: 
Start at long side with White & #10 hk, make ch long enough to reach from waist, around back of skirt to bottom & to other side of waist.

1ST ROW:  Sc in 2nd ch from hk, * ch 5, sk 3 ch, sc in next ch.  Rep from * across.  Ch 5, turn.

3RD ROW:  Sc in 1st lp, * ch 2, sc in next lp, [pull lp on hk out to meas 14”, yo & draw lp thru, insert hk bet single & double lps & draw lp thru, yo & draw thru 2 lps on hk [knot st made, make another knot st, sc in same lp--knot st lp made] 3 times; ch 2, sc in next lp, ch 6, sc in next lp.  Rep from * across, end with ch 2, make 3 knot st lps in next lp, ch 2, dc in next lp.  Ch 1, turn.

4TH ROW:  Sc in 1st dc, * make 1 knot st, [sc in knot at center of next knot st lp, ch 5] twice; sc in knot at center of next knot st lp, make 1 knot st, sc in next ch-6 lp.  Rep from * across.  Ch 1, turn. 
Break off & sew around Skirt & Bodice.

SHAMROCK:  [MAKE 2]: 
Start at center with Bright Nile Green & #10 hk, ch 10.  Join with sl st to form ring.

FIRST LEAF: 
1ST ROW:  Ch 4, tr in ring. Ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW:  2 Dc in 1st tr, 3 dc in next ch. Ch 1, turn.

3RD ROW:  2 Sc in 1st dc, sc in each dc across, 2 sc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn
[8 sc].

4TH ROW:  Sk 1st sc, hold back on hk last lp of each dc, make dc in next 3 sc, yo & draw thru all lps on hk [cluster made], ch 3, sl st bet last sc worked & next sc, ch 3, make cluster over next 3 sc, ch 3, sl st in next sc.  Break off.

SECOND LEAF: 
Attach thread to ring, ch 4 & complete Leaf as before. 

Make another leaf same way. 

Sew to Skirt.

HAT: 
Start at center with Hunters Green & #7 hk, ch 4.

1ST RND:  11 Dc in 4th ch from hk. Join.

2ND RND:  2 Dc in each dc around. Join.

3RD & 4TH RNDS:  Inc 12 dc evenly around.

5TH RND:  Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join & break off.

BRIM: 
Start at center, ch 48.  Join, be careful not to twist.

1ST RND:  Ch 3, * 2 dc in next ch, dc in next ch.  Rep from * around.  Join.

2ND THRU 5TH RNDS:  Inc 12 dc evenly around.  Join. 

Break off at end of 5th rnd. 

Sew Brim to crown of Hat. 


Sew feather to hat. 

Make small rosette of green ribbon & sew to side of hat.

PARASOL: 
Start at bottom with Hunters Green, ch 8.  Join with sl st to form ring.

1ST RND:  Ch 4, tr in same place as sl st, 2 tr in each ch around.  Join.

2ND THRU 7TH RNDS:  Inc 16 tr evenly around.  Join. 

Break off at end of 7th rnd. 

Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch, ch 4, tr in same ch, 2 tr in each ch around.  Join & break off.

Make piece of white lace as before to reach around top of parasol.

Make another piece of lace to reach around bottom.

Sew in place.

Insert pipe cleaner thru bottom & tack in place, leaving 1” free. 

Tack top at intervals & sew to handle.

BOW: 
1ST ROW:  Start at center with Hunters Green, ch 4, dc in 4th ch from hk.  Ch 3, turn.

2ND ROW;  Dc in 1st dc, 2 dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

3RD ROW:  Dc in 1st dc, dc in next 2 dc, 2 dc in top of turning ch.  Ch 3, turn.

4TH ROW;  Dc in 1st dc, dc in next 4 dc, 2 dc in top of turning ch.  Break off.

Attach thread to opposite side of starting ch, ch 3, dc in next ch.  Ch 3, turn. 

Rep 2nd, 3rd & 4th rows. 

Sew to handle of parasol.

PANTIES: 
Start at waist make ch long enough to reach around widest part of doll.  Join, be careful not to twist.

1ST THRU 4TH RNDS:  Ch 3, dc in each st around.  Join.

FOR 11“ DOLLS WORK 9 RNDS [INSTEAD OF 4 RNDS]

Ch 4 for crotch & sl st directly opposite.  Break off. 

Draw cord thru sts of 1st rnd.

PETTICOAT: 
Cut strip of 6“ crinoline hemline binding 18” long. 

Gather across one long side to fit around doll's waist. 

Sew back seam, leaving 1“ opening at top. 

Sew bias binding around top. 

Sew hook & eye at back. 

Turn up hem to correspond with length of skirt.
