create, this elegant envelope clutch will become a season-spanning

Approximate
Size 15 ½” by 7”
BAG:
Ch
68, 1 sc in 2nd st from hook & in each st to end [67 sc].
2ND
& ALL EVEN NUMBERED ROWS: Ch 1,
turn, 1 sc in each st of row below.
3RD
ROW [RIGHT SIDE]: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in
each of first 3 sts, work 1 dc around pos of 2nd sc of first row,
* sk next sc on top row, 1 sc in each of next 3 sts, sk 3 sc of first row, 1 dc
around post of next sc; rep from *, end 1 sc in each of last 3 sc.
5TH
ROW: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 4
sts, * 1 dc around post of next dc on 2nd row below, sk 1 sc, 1 sc
in each of next 3 sts *; rep bet *’s, end 2 sc instead of 3 sc.
7TH
ROW: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in first sc, 1 dc
around post of first sc of 2nd row below, sk 1 sc, 1 sc in each of
next 3 sts; rep bet *’s of 5th row, end 1 sc instead of 3 sc.
9TH
ROW: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of first 2
sts; rep bet *’s of 5th row, end 4 sc instead of 3 sc.
11TH
ROW: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each of 3 sts;
rep bet *’s of 5th row.
12TH
ROW: Same as 2nd row.
Rep
last 8 rows [from 5th to 12th row] for patt.
Work
until 14”, end on wrong side. Fasten
off.
FLAP:
Turn,
sk first 8 sts, work center 51 sts in patt for 4 ½”, end on wrong side. Fasten off.
FINISHING:
Steam
lightly.
Fold
bag up to flap & sew side seams.
Line
bag & flap.
Fold
flap lengthwise & tack ends of last row of flap to ends of first row.
Fold
8 sts each side of each side seam into an inverted pleat at top of bag,
tapering pleat out toward bottom to form gussets.
Tack
top of pleats at outside fold & press.
BUTTONLOOP:
With
double yarn ch 12 & attach 1” each side of center flap.
Sew
on button.
Note: Cardboard
or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape
of bag extra support.
