Free Pattern - Vintage 1930s Bow-Trimmed Dress #121 - Knit

Vintage 1930s Bow-Trimmed Dress #121 - Knit

An adaptation from the French.  The simplicity & grace of line give to this creation a rare dignity & charm.

SIZE:  16

18 - 1 oz balls Mahogany Shetland Floss
1 Circular Needle 3 ½ mm                         
1 Pair Straight Needles 3 ½ mm
1 Crochet Hook # 2

13 sts = 2”.

Cast on 100 sts & k in stockinette st [st st] for 9”. 

Bind off 5 sts, beg next 2 rows, then dec 1 st at beg & end of next 7 k rows, then work in st st for 5”.

On the next k row, k 25 sts & put on holder to be used later for right shoulder, bind off next 26 sts for back of neck. 

Work rem 25 sts in st st for 15 rows, then inc 1 st at neck edge every other row 5 times.

Cast on 10 sts at neck edge & cont in st st until armhole edge meas same length as on back from shoulder to last dec, then inc 1 st at armhole edge on next 7 k rows.

Then cast on 5 sts on armhole edge & cont to work in st st until front opening meas 10”, cast on 7 sts & k both fronts onto one needle & cont work until underarm meas same as back.  Bind off.

Pick up 10 sts either side of shoulder, cont in st st, pick up 2 more sts at end of each row until all sts have been picked up around armhole & there are 80 sts on needle.

Dec 1 st each end of needle every 8th row until there are 44 sts. 

Work until sleeve meas 16” from underarm.

On next k row, k 30 sts, put on st holder to be used later, bind off 1 st, work rem 13 sts in st st for 1 ½”.  Bind off. 

Pick up 30 sts from st holder & k to correspond. 

Sew up seams

Crochet 2 rows sc around sleeve opening & crochet cuff band & bow ends same as on neck. 

Sc 1 row around bottom of blouse & sew to skirt.

Sc 7 rows on left side of opening. 

Sc 3 rows on right side of opening.

4th row make buttonholes as follows:  Start at bottom of opening, sc for 1 ½”, ch 3, sk 3 sts, sc in 4th st.  Make 3 more buttonholes 1 ½” apart. 

Lap right front crocheted band over left front band & fasten at bottom.

Chain desired length for bow & ends & sc until band meas 1” in width.

Cast on 350 sts on circular needle. 

K plain for 8”.

1st dec rnd:  K every 21st & 22nd st tog, make 16 decs. 

K 3” even.

2nd dec rnd:  K every 20th & 21st st tog, make 16 decs. 

K 3” even. 

Cont to dec 16 sts every 3” [always have 1 st less bet decs] until skirt meas 25”. 

Dec 16 sts.

K even for 2” bet decs until skirt meas 31”, 210 sts on needle.  Bind off.

Sc 3 rows around bottom of skirt, 1 row around top.
