Vintage 1943 Evening Knit Sweater Jacket #667

A skillful needlewoman will swiftly knit this elegant sweater…
A delightful, addition to the well-dressed woman‘s wardrobe!

SIZES:  12, 14, 16 & 18. 
Directions are for 12 with changes for 14, 16, & 18 in brackets.

Materials: 
Beehive Moorland, 3-ply, 1 oz,-- 8 [9,10,10] skeins of Main Color [MC] & 1 skein of Contrasting Color [CC] for each size
1 Pair each #3 & #5 Knitting Needles
6 Snap Fasteners
2 yds Grosgrain Ribbon, ½” wide
Shoulder Pads

GAUGE: 
8 sts = 1”;   
9 rows = 1”

MEASUREMENTS: 
Bust 31” [33”, 35”, 37”]; 
Across back at underarm 15 ½” [16 ½”, 17 ½”, 18 ½”]
Across each front at underarm 7 ¾” [8 ¼”, 8 ¾”, 9 ¼”]
Length from shoulder to lower edge 20” [20 ½”, 21”, 21 ½”]
Side seam 13” [13”, 13 ½”, 13 ½”]
Sleeve seam 11” [11”, 11 ½”, 11 ½”]
Across sleeve at upper arm 12 ½” [13”, 13”, 13 ½”]

PATTERN STITCH [MULTIPLE OF 2 STS]: 
1ST ROW:  K 1, * insert needle in 1st st as if to p & k 2nd st thru 1st st.  Sl 2nd st off needle & k in back of 1st st [thus crossing 2 sts].  Rep from * across, end with k 1.

2ND ROW:  P.

3RD ROW:  K 2, * insert needle thru next st & k following st, sl it off needle.  K in back of 1st st on needle.  Rep from * across row.

4TH ROW:  P. 
Rep these 4 rows for patt.

BACK: 
With #5 needles cast on 112 [120, 128, 136] sts. 

Work in patt st for 5”.  inc 1 st at both ends of next row & thereafter every 5th [5th, 6th, 6th] row until there are on needle 124 [132, 140, 148] sts.

Work straight until piece meas 13” [13”, 13 ½”, 13 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLES: 
Bind off at beg of next 2 rows 6 [7, 7, 8] sts. 

Dec 1 st at end of each row until there rem 100 [104, 112, 116] sts.

Work straight until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 6 ½” [7”, 7”, 7 ½”].

SHAPE SHOULDERS:  
Bind off at beg of next 4 rows 10 [11, 12, 13] sts.

Bind off 12 sts at beg of next 2 rows. 

Bind off rem 36 [36, 40, 40] sts for back of neck.

LEFT FRONT: 
With #5 needles cast on 40 [44, 48, 52] sts. 

Work in patt st, casting on 3 sts at end of 1st row [front edge] & every other row thereafter 2 more times; then inc 1 st at seam edge every other row until there are on needle 56 [60, 64, 68] sts.

Work straight in patt until piece meas 5”. 

Inc 1 st at side edge on next row & thereafter every 5th [5th, 6th, 6th] row until there are on needle 62 [66, 70, 74] sts.

Work straight until piece meas 13” [13”, 13 ½”, 13 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLE: 
Bind off at side edge once 6 [7, 7, 8] sts.

Dec 1 st at same edge every other row until there rem 50 [52, 56, 58] sts.

Work straight in patt until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 4 ½” [5”, 5”, 5 ½”].

Change to #3 needles & cont in patt until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 6 ½” [7”, 7”, 7 ½”].

SHAPE SHOULDER: 
Bind off at armhole edge every other row twice 12 [13, 14, 15] sts.

Bind off at same edge once 14 [14, 16, 16] sts.

Work in patt over rem 12 sts for neckband for 2 ¼” [2 ¼”, 2 ½”, 2 ½”].  Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Work to correspond with Left Front, being careful to reverse shapings.

SLEEVES: 
With #3 needles cast on 76 [80, 80, 86] sts.

Work in patt st for 2”. 

Change to #5 needles & cont working in patt, inc 1 st at both ends of next row & thereafter every 4th [5th, 5th, 5th] row until there are on needle 100 [104, 104, 108] sts.

Work straight until piece meas 11” [11”, 11 ½”, 11 ½”].

To shape top, bind off at beg of next 2 rows 6 [7, 7, 8] sts.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of each row until there rem 60 [62, 62, 68] sts.

Dec 1 st at both ends of every 3rd row until 44 sts rem. 

Bind off 3 sts at beg of each row until 20 sts rem.  Bind off.

FINGER CORD: 
Divide CC yarn into 6 balls each 23 yds long & tie ends tog.

Divide strands in 2 & make loop close to knot. 

Draw loop out 1 ½”. 

Then, holding 3 strands in each hand & loop on index finger of right hand, * insert index finger of left hand in front of loop, & draw loop of 3 strands of left hand thru; remove index finger of right hand. 

Then, holding strands of left hand & loop on index finger firmly, pull strands of right hand tightly. 

Now insert index finger of right hand in front of loop & draw loop of 3 strands of right hand thru; remove index finger of left hand &, holding strands of right hand & loop on index finger firmly, pull strands in left hand tightly.  Rep from * to end of yarn.

FINISHING: 
Sew shoulder seams, easing front shoulder in to fit back shoulder. 

Sew bound-off edges of front neckband tog at center back. 

Sew lower edge of neckband to back of neck. 

Sew side seams & sleeve seams. 

Sew in sleeves. 

With wrong side facing, starting at side seam of left front, sew ribbon along entire edge of both fronts, ending at side seam of right front. 

Sew snap fasteners along front edge, having top one 1” below armhole & bottom one 4” from lower edge & 4 spaced-evenly bet. 

Make tissue paper patt of right front & draw design for finger cord as in photo. 

Make tracing of this patt for left front & use wrong side of tracing to that design will be reversed. 

Pin these patts to garment & baste along design for finger cord. 

Break paper away & sew cord over basting, starting at back of neck with small single leaf & cont down 1 front, along lower edge of back & along other front,  ending at back of neck with corresponding leaf. 

Sew in shoulder pads.
