Vintage 1946 Baby’s Smocked Pullover Knit Sweater #B-134

SIZE:
1 ½ Years

MATERIALS:
American Thread Co Dawn Worsted Floss, Art #W16, 1 oz – 4 balls
10 yds Contrast Color for Smocking
4 Pearl Buttons
Pair Bone Knitting Needles #1
Pair Bone Knitting Needles #3
4 Double Pointed Knitting Needles #3
Bone Crochet Hook #2

GAUGE:
7 sts = 1”
10 rows = 1”

SWEATER:
BACK:
On #1 needles, cast on 76 sts.

Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1”.

Change to #3 needles.

Work in stockinette st [k 1 row, p 1 row] until work meas 7” from beg.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at beg of each row until there are 58 sts left on needle, ending work with k row.  Sl these sts on st holder.

FRONT:
Work same as back.

SLEEVES:
On #1 needles, cast on 60 sts.

Work same as back until work meas 7” from beg.

Bind off 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Dec 1 st at beg of each row until there are 34 sts left on needle, ending work with k row.  Sl these sts on st holder.

Sl sts off st holders on 3 needles as follows:
On 1st needle sl last 34 sts of back & 1 sleeve, on 2nd needle sl front sts, on 3rd needle sl rem sleeve & rem sts of back.

P across 3 needles, inc 1 st in row [185 sts], turn.

YOKE:
* K 1, p 3, rep from * across row ending with k 1, turn.

NEXT ROW:  * P 1, k 3, rep from * across row, ending with p 1, turn.

Rep last 2 rows twice.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, p 2 tog, p 1, rep from * across row, ending with k 1.

NEXT ROW:  * P 1, k 2, rep from * across row, ending with p 1.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, p 2, rep from * across row, ending with k 1.

Rep last 2 rows twice.

NEXT ROW:  * P 1, k 2, rep from * across row, ending with p 1.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, p 2 tog, rep from * across row, ending with k 1.

NEXT ROW:  * P 1, k 1, rep from * across row, ending with p 1.

NEXT ROW:  * K 1, p 1, rep from * across row, ending with k 1.

Rep last 2 rows twice, bind off.

Press each section.

Sew side & sleeve seams & underarm seams.

Attach yarn at right top at back of neck opening.

Work row of sc around opening, turn.

2ND ROW:  * Ch 3, sk 2 sc, sc in each of next 2 sc [buttonhole], rep from * 3 times, break yarn.

SMOCKING:
Use contrast color & start at lower edge of neck opening.

Bring needle to left of 1st k rib of 1st row, insert needle to right of 2nd k rib of 1st row [pass needle over p sts] draw these 2 sts tog tightly & work over them 2nd time bringing needle up to left of 2nd k rib of 5th row.

Insert needle to right of 3rd k rib of 5th row & draw these 2 sts tog in same manner, bringing yarn down to left of 3rd k rib of 1st row.

Insert needle to right of 4th k rib & draw sts tog in same manner, bringing yarn up to left of 4th k rib of 5th row.

Insert needle to right of 5th k rib of 5th row.

Cont in same manner across row.

Work 2 more rows of smocking in same manner about ½” apart.

Work 1 row of smocking at top edge.

Sew buttons in position.
