Vintage Marianna Chic Classic Hat #623

Quick & easy to knit this delightful hat of rich Persian curl…a fashionable wardrobe favorite!

Materials:
Hiawatha Persian Curl Art #31, 1 skein
Hiawatha Hat Lining #6964
#10 Knitting Needles
1 yd Velvet Ribbon 2” wide
Buckle Trim

GAUGE:  
2 sts = 1”;      3 rows = 1”

HAT:  
Cast on 3 sts.

1ST ROW:  K 1, p 1, k 1.

2ND ROW:  K & p on Front lp of 1st st, k on back lp of same st [double inc made], p 1, work double inc in last st [7 sts].

3RD ROW:  K 1, * p on front lp, k on back lp & p on front lp of next st [double inc made], k next st.  Rep from * to end [3 double incs --13 sts].

4TH ROW:  * K 1, p 1, k 1, work double inc in next st.  Rep from * ending with k 1 [3 double incs--19 sts]. 

Cont to work 3 double incs each row, not directly over prev incs, keeping seed st patt [k the p sts & p the k sts] until there are 37 sts. 

Work even until piece is 6 ½” from beg [meas at center].  Bind off loosely in patt.

FINISHING:  
With seam at center back, insert hat lining & pin in place, turning up 1” for facing in front only.

Sew ends of rows tog, row for row.

Draw cast-on sts tog.

Sew to lining with back edge at edge of lining.

Trim as shown.

Materials:
Hiawatha Super Corde Art #38, 2 tubes
Hiawatha Hat Lining #6979
#1 Steel Crochet Hook
2 yds Velvet Ribbon 1” wide

GAUGE: 
6 sc = 1”;      1 cross st rnd = 1”

TOP: 
Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch, forming rind.

CROWN: 
Ch 6 to meas 1”.

1ST RND:  3 Sc in 2nd ch from hk, sc in each of next 3 ch, 3 sc in enc ch, cont around work sc in each of next 3 ch [12 sts].

2ND RND:  [2 Sc in each of next 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 sts] twice.

3RD RND:  Inc 3 sts around curve at each end [6 incs].

Rep 3rd rnd [do not inc directly over prev incs], until there are 114 sts.

Work sc even for 1” ending at center of 1 short end.  Sl st in next st.’

PATTERN: 
1ST RND:  Ch 4, sk 1 st, thru both lps work trc in next st, ch 5, trc in top of prev trc --starting cross st made-- * yo 4 times, insert hk in next st & draw lp thru, [over & thru 2 lps] twice; yo twice, sk 1 st, draw up lp in next st, [over & thru 2 lps] 6 times; ch 1, trc in center of cross st.  Rep from * around [38 cross sts].  Sl st in 4th st of ch-5.

2ND RND:  * 2 Sc in next sp, sk next trc, sc bet cross sts.  Rep from * around [114 sc].

If necessary, work sc even to fit crown.

BRIM: 
1ST RND:  Thru front lps only * sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [152 sts].

Thru both lps work 1 ¾” sc even.

FINISHING: 
Insert lining in crocheted piece, with starting ch straight from front to back.

DEC RND:  * Sc in next st, draw up lp in each of next 2 sts, over & thru 3 lps [dec made].  Rep from * around.

Work 1 rnd sc even.  End off.

Weave velvet ribbon thru cross st rnd & make bow at center back.

Sew front of last rnd to inside edge of brim.

Turn up excess width of back brim to inside of hat & sew.

TOP:  
Ch 3, sl st in 1st ch, forming rind.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in rind.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st.  Mark beg of rnds.

3RD RND:  * Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Rep from * around [6 incs].

Inc 6 sts each rnd [not directly over prev incs] until there are 84 sts & piece is 4 ½” across.  Sl st in next st.

NEXT RND:  Thru back lps only, sc in each st.  Sl st in next st.

PATTERN:

1940s Rachel Stylish Ribbon Hat #620

A clever needlewoman will quickly & easily crochet this charming hat…& find herself to be the most fashionably dressed lady where ever she travels in her season-spanning favorite!

MATERIALS: 
Mogor Crochet Gimp, 4 tubes
#3 Crochet Hook
2 yds Ribbon, 1” wide

GAUGE: 
7 sts = 1”;     8 rows = 1”

HAT:
To start, ch 4, join with sl st.

1ST ROW:  6 Sc in loop.

2ND ROW:  2 Sc in each st of prev row.

3RD ROW:  * 1 Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, * & rep until end of row.

Cont making 6 incs in each row until hat meas 6” across, then cont without inc until hat meas 5 ½” from center to edge.  Break thread.

BRIM: 
Ch enough to go around crown, join with sl st, sc in each ch & work around until brim meas 2 ½”, & join to crown with sc.

Pleat ribbon & sew on top of brim.

HEAD BAND: 
Wind gimp around 2 fingers 5 times to form lp & sc around lp to form ring, ch 1, turn, sc in 5 sts of prev row, ch 1, turn, sc twice in next st, sc to end of row & twice in last st, ch 1, turn.

Sc in each st of prev row.

Inc in first & last st of every other row until there are 11 sts, & then cont until band is long enough to fit ½ side of head.  Break thread.

Start other side of ring & make other side of band.

Join to hat to fit snugly around head.

This is so lovely, you’ll want to start all over again in another color!

SIZE:  22”

MATERIALS: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls Dark Red
#4 Steel Crochet Hook
Millinery Wire

CROWN: 
To beg, ch 3.

1ST RND:  6 Sc in 2nd st of ch.

2ND RND:  2 Sc in each st of prev rnd.

3RD RND:  2 Sc in next st, 1 sc in next st, rep from * around.

4TH RND:  * 2 Sc in next st, 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, rep from * around. 

Cont inc 6 times each rnd at equal distances apart. 

Do not make incs over incs of prev rnd.

Work until crown meas 5 ¾” diameter.

For larger head-size work more rnds as necessary.

Work 2 rnds without inc.

In next rnd, inc 5 times, spaced at equal distances, work 2 rnds without inc. 

Inc 4 times in next rnd, spacing evenly, work 3 rnds without inc, & inc 4 times in next rnd. 

Then work evenly until crown meas 4 ½” from center to edge.
Inc 6 times in next rnd. 

* Work 1 rnd even.

Inc 7 times on next rnd.

Rep from * once & work 3 rnds without inc.

Use thread double & work in back loop of sts [this row only], make 1 sc in each st & inc in every 5th st.  Join with sl st, ch 1, turn.

Work 5 rows even, take up both loops of sts & always join each row at end with sl st, ch 1 & turn for entire brim.

7TH ROW:  Inc in every 12th st.

8TH THRU 11TH ROWS:  Work even.

12TH ROW:  Inc in every 20th st. 

Work 2 rows even, & for last row work over millinery wire, & fasten off.

BOW: 
With thread doubled, ch 13. 

Sc in 2nd ch from hook & sc in each st of ch.  Ch 1, turn.
