Vintage Irish Cable Knit Cape #322

Directions are for small [6 -10] & medium [12-16]. 
Changes for medium sizes are in brackets.

Materials: 
Knitting worsted, 6 - 4 oz pull skeins
1 Circular Knitting Needle #11:    
1 Pair #8 Knitting Needles
1 Cable Needle                            
1 #G Crochet Hook
Buttons

Gauge: 
4 sts = 1”;
11 rows = 2”

Bust Measurements: 
Small - 32 ½”; 
Medium - 38”

Cape:
With circular needle, cast on 331 [363].  Do not join, work back & forth:

1st row [right side]:  P 4 [5], k 8, p 4 [5], * k 2 tog, yo, k 1, sk, p 4 [5], k 8, p 4 [5], rep from * across.

2nd row & all even rows:  K 4 [5], p 8, k 4 [5], * p 5, k 4 [5], p 8, k 4 [5], rep from * across.

3rd row:  P 4 [5], sl next 4 to cable needle & hold in back, k next 4 then k the 4 from cable needle to twist cable, p 4 [5], * k 5, p 4 [5], twist cable, p 4 [5], rep from * across.

5th row:  Rep 1st row.

7th row:  P 4 [5], k 8, p 4 [5], * k 5, p 4 [5], k 8, p 4 [5], rep from * across.

9th row:  Rep 1st row.

11th row:  Rep 7th row.

12th row:  Rep 2nd row. 

Rep these 12 rows for pattern, working until 2nd cable twist row has been completed. 

Arm Slits: 
Work 1st 46 [51] sts, drop yarn but do not break off; join 2nd skein of yarn & work to last 46 [51] sts, drop skein; join 3rd skein & work to end. 

Working 3 separate sections with 3 skeins of yarn, continue in pattern until 5th cable twist row has been completed.  Break off 2nd & 3rd skeins.

Next row:  On wrong side with remaining skein work across all 331 [363] sts to complete arm slits. 

1st dec row:  P 2 [3], p 2 tog, k 8, p 2 [3], p 2 tog, * k 2 tog, yo, k 1, yo, sk, p 2 [3], p 2 tog, k 8, p 2 [3], p 2 tog, rep from * across; 32 decs.  Work 11 rows on 299 [331] sts.

2nd dec row:  P 2 tog, p 1 [2], k 8, p 2 tog, p 1 [2], * k 2 tog, yo, k 1, yo, sk, p 2 tog, p 1 [2], k 8, p 2 tog, p 1 [2], rep from * across.  Work 11 rows on 267 [299] sts. 

Next row:  Dec 1 in each p 2 [3] rib.  With 1 [2] sts in dec ribs, work 11 more rows on 235 [267] sts.

Medium only: 
Dec 1 st in each p 2 rib.

All sizes: 
With 1 st in each dec rib, work in pat on 235 sts, end with 9th cable twist row. 

Change to #8 needles.

Yoke: 
P 1, [ p 2 tog] 4 times, p 1, * p 2 tog, p 1, p 2 tog, p 1, [p 2 tog] 4 times, p 1, rep from * across:  141 sts.

2nd row [right side]:  K 1, * p 3, k 1, rep from * across.

3rd row:  P 1, * k 3, p 1, rep from * across. 

Rep last 2 rows 3 times more then rep 2nd row once more, end on right side.

11th row:  P 1, * k 1, k 2 tog, p 1, rep from * across: 106 sts. 

With 1 st less in each dec rib, work 9 more rows, end on right side.

21st row:  P 1, * k 2 tog, p 1, rep from * across.  Continue in ribbing on remaining 71 sts to 6” above start of yoke, end on right side. 

K next row for turn. 

K 1 row & p 1 row for 7 rows for facing.  Bind off. 

Turn facing to wrong side & sew. 

On right side starting at neck edge, crochet 84 sc on left front edge, ch 1, turn. 

Work 4 more rows of sc.  Fasten off. 

On right side, starting at lower edge crochet 84 sc on right front edge, ch 1, turn. 

Work 1 more row, ch 1, turn. 

Buttonholes: 
1 Sc in each of 1st 2 sc ch 3, sk 3, [1 sc in each of next 8 sc, ch 3, sk 3] 7 times, 1 sc in each of last 2 sc, ch 1, turn. 

Work 1 sc in each sc & in each ch st, ch 1, turn & work 1 more row, end at neck, ch 1, do not turn, work sc across top of button band, fasten off.

Armbands: 
On back edge of arm slits, starting on right side work 28 sc, ch 1, turn & work 6 more rows. 

Sew short edges in place. 

On right side work 1 row of sl st on front edge of arm slits.

Fringe: 
Cut 3 - 14” strands. 

Fold in half & draw loop thru st at lower edge. 

Draw ends thru loop & tighten. 

Make 9 fringes to each pattern.
