Vintage 1946 Tote Carry-All Bag #246 - Crochet

Materials
Bucilla Strawkraft
OR
Fleisher’s Straw-Twist, 4 balls
1 Steel Crochet Hook #3
Lining Material

Gauge
6 sts = 1” 

Bag:
Ch 5, join with sl st; ch 3, work 14 dc in ring [15 sts counting ch 3 as dc]; join this & every dc rnd with sl st in top of ch 3.

2nd rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, 2 dc in each st; 30 sts.

3rd rnd:  Ch 3, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 45 sts.

4th rnd:  Ch 3, 1 dc in next st, * 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of 2 sts; rep from *, end 2 dc in last st; 60 sts. 

Continue in this way to inc 15 sts every rnd, having 1 st more bet incs in each rnd, until there are 8 rnds; 120 sts.

9th rnd:  Working in back loop of each st, sk 1st st, 1 sc in each st to end of end; 119 sts. 

Do not join, continue around working 1 sc in back loop of each st until 6 rnds of sc in all.  Mark end of rnds.

15th rnd:  Pattern:  Working in both loops, work * 1 sc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of 3 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st; rep from * to end, continue around. 

Work 2 rnds sc.

18th rnd:  1 Sc in each of 4 sts, draw up a long loop thru 1st ch 1 sp 3 rows below, * draw up another long loop thru next ch 1 sp in the same rnd, yo, thru all loops on hook, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of 6 sts, draw up a long loop thru next ch 1 sp 3 rows below *, rep between *’s, end with long loop in last ch 1 sp, yo, thru all loops, sk 1 st, 1 sc in each of last 2 sts. 

Rep 15th to 18th rnd 8 times. 

Work 1 sc in back loop of each st for 6 rnds, sl st in next st.  Fasten off.

Handle BandsMake 2
Ch 11, 1 sc in 2nd & each st of ch. 

Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each st. 

Rep last row 8 times.  Fasten off.

LINE BAG
Finished Linings with zippers attached may be purchased ready-made; or may be made using suitable lining material & buckram for stiffening. 

Cut buckram ¼” smaller than bag on all sides, cover with lining & sew into bag with zipper at opening. 

Ch 15, work 2 rows sc on ch. 

Attach ring to slide pull with this piece. 

Fasten handles with band to each side of bag, as illustrated.

Note:  Cardboard or lightweight plastic may be inserted between bag & lining to give shape of bag extra support.
