Vintage 1946 Knit Raglan Coat with Scarf & Hat #987

“Topper” – Taffeta trimmed raglan coat.  From any angle it puts you at the top of the Style Parade!  The crocheted Medallion dots on the taffeta Ascot Scarf & Hat “spark up” the coat.

SIZES: 
14 to 16 & 18 to 20.
Directions are for 14 to 16 with changes for 18 to 20 in brackets.

MATERIALS:
Columbia Featherweight knitting worsted, 2 oz: 14 [18] skeins
Pair standard knitting needles #3 – 14”
Crochet hook size #3
1 yd of Taffeta of contrasting Color for Hat & Scarf
[Polka Dots are crocheted of yarn & sewn on Hat & Scarf.]

GAUGE:
8 sts = 1”

PATTERN STITCH:  [MULTIPLE OF 6 STS PLUS 4]:

1ST ROW:  K 4, * sk 5th st, k in back of 6th st, but do not sl off needle, k 5th st & let 6th st drop off needle, k 4, rep from * across row.

2ND ROW:  P.

3RD ROW:  K 3, * sk 4th st, k 5th st in front but do not sl off needle, k 4th st then drop 5th st off needle, sk 6th st, k 7th st in front but do not sl off needle, k 6th st & let 7th st drop off needle, k 2, rep from * across row, end k 3.

4TH ROW:  P.

5TH ROW:  Same as 1st row.

6TH ROW:  P.

7TH ROW:  K 1, * sk 2nd st, k in back of 3rd st, then k 2nd st & drop 3rd st off needle, k 4, rep from * across row, end k 1 instead of k 4.

8TH ROW:  P.

9TH ROW:  * Sk 1st st, k 2nd st in front but do not sl off needle, k 1st st & sl 2nd st off needle, sk 3rd st & k 4th st in front but do not sl off needle, then k 3rd st & sl 4th st off needle, k 2, rep from * across row.

10TH ROW:  P.

11TH ROW:  Same as 7th row.

12TH ROW:  P.

Rep 12 rows for patt.

BACK:
Cast on 208 [220] sts.

Work even in patt st for 6”, [allow 3” for hem].

Dec 1 st each side, then dec 1 st each side every 1” 16 times, then dec 1 st each side every ½” 6 times.

Sts on needle – 162 [174] sts.

When work meas 26” [27”] from start:

SHAPE ARMHOLES:
Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side, every other row 37 times, then every row 19 [21] times.

Bind off rem 34 [42] sts.

RIGHT FRONT:
Cast on 130 [136] sts.

Work even in patt st for 6”, [allow 3” for hem].

Cast on 12 sts at front edge for facing.

Dec1 st at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every 1” 16 times, then every ½” 6 times.

Sts on needle – 119 [125] sts.

When work meas 26” [27”] from start:

SHAPE ARMHOLE:
Bind off 8 sts at side edge, then dec 1 st at same edge every other row 17 times, then every row 56 times, at same time when 72 sts rem on needle, work double buttonholes as follows:
Work 2 sts, bind off 8 sts, work 7 sts, bind off next 8 sts.  Work to end of row, [cont decs at armhole edge].

On next row cast on 8 sts over bound off sts.

Work 4 more rows.

SHAPE NECK:
Bind off 26 sts at front, edge, then bind off 2 sts at neck edge every other row 6 times, cont decs at armhole edge until all sts are worked off.

Work Left Front to correspond.

SLEEVES:
Cast on 112 [118] sts.

Work even in patt st for 5”.

Inc 1 st each side, then inc 1 st each side every 2” 3 times more.

Work even until work meas 18” from start.

Sts on needle – 120 [126] sts.

Bind off 8 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row 40 [43] times, then dec 1 st each side every row 12 times.

COLLAR:
Cast on 112 sts, work in patt st for 3”.

Fold & sew to neck edge.


FINISHING:
Turn front facing under & sew lightly.

Overcast double buttonholes.

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Sew sleeves in place.

Face 3” at bottom of sleeves with taffeta.

Turn up hem at bottom of coat.

Sew on buttons.

HAT:
Cover any desired buckram shape with taffeta, or cut Dutch Bonnet shape for hat.

SCARF:
Cut double strips on bias of material 7” wide & 20” long, shape point at each end.

POLKA DOT TRIMMING:
Ch 3, join in ring with sl st.

1ST ROW:  6 Sc in ring.

2ND ROW:  2 Sc in each st.  [Work thru back lp of st.]

3RD ROW:  * 1 Sc in 1st st, 2 sc in next st, rep from * around, break yarn & fasten off.

Make about 15 Polka Dots & sew to Scarf & Hat as shown in photo.

SIZE: 
Directions are for size 14.  Changes for size 16 & 18 are in brackets.

MATERIALS:

Chadwick’s Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 2-oz skeins or 1-oz balls
            Size 14 - 21 oz          Size 16 - 23 oz          Size 18 - 25 oz
29” Circular knitting needle #6

MEASUREMENTS:
Bust – 35” [37” – 39”]
Width across back at underarm – 16 ½” [17 ½” – 18 ½”]
Width across each front at underarm – 9 ¼” [9 ¾” – 10 ¼”]
Length from top of shoulder – 23” [23 ½” – 24 ½”]
Length of side seam – 16” [16” – 16 ½”]
Sleeve seam – 17” [17 ½” – 18”]
Width of sleeve at upperarm – 13” [14” – 14 ½”]

GAUGE:
1 patt = 2 ½”
6 rows = 1”

Jacket is worked in one piece up to underarm.

JACKET:
Starting at bottom, cast on 252 [264 – 276] sts.  Do not join, but work back & forth in rows as follows:

1ST ROW:  * Work wide stripe over next 8 sts as follows: p 1, [sk 1 st, p next st, then p st that was skipped & allow both sts to slip off left-hand needle] 3 times, p 1.  K 2, p 6, k 2 [cable stripe].  Rep from * 2 more times.  

** Work narrow stripe over next 4 sts as follows:  p 1, sk 1 st, p next st, then p st that was skipped & allow both sts to sl off left-hand needle, p 1, k 2.  Rep from ** 3 [4 – 5] more times.  

Then p 6, k 2; [work wide stripe over next 8 sts, k 2, p 6, k 2] 5 times.  

Then [work narrow stripe over next 4 sts, k 2] 4 [5 – 6] times.

Then p 6, k 2; [work wide stripe over next 8 sts, k 2, p 6, k 2] twice; work wide stripe over rem 8 sts.

2ND ROW:  * Work wide stripe over next 8 sts as follows: [sk 1 st, k in back of next st, then k in front of st that was skipped & allow both sts to sl off left-hand needle] 4 times.  P2, k 6, p 2 [cable stripe].  Rep from * 2 more times.

4TH ROW:  Work as for 2nd row for 10 sts, make cable over next 6 sts –to make a cable, sl next 3 sts onto double-pointed needle & hold in back of work, k next 3 sts, then k 3 sts from double-pointed needle.

Work in patt as established in 2nd row over next 12 sts, cable over next 6 sts & cont in patt making cable over each group of k 6 sts across [12 cables].

Rep these 4 rows for patt until piece meas in all 16” [16” – 16 ½”].

SHAPE ARMHOLE:  Work across [right front] 62 [64 – 67] sts.

Bind off [for underarm] next 6 [8 – 6] sts.

For back, work across 116 [120 – 130] sts.

Bind off [for 2nd underarm] following 6 [8 – 6] sts.

LEFT FRONT: 
Work across rem sts.

Turn & work over last set of sts only, binding off 2 sts at armhole edge every other row until there rem 54 [54 – 59] sts.

Work straight in patt until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping, ending at front edge 5 ½” [6” – 6”].

Bind off 18 sts for front of neck, then work straight over rem 36  [36 – 41] sts until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 7” [7 ½” – 8”].  Bind off.

BACK: 
Attach yarn to sts of back & work in patt, binding off 2 sts at beg of each row until there rem 100 [100 – 110] sts.

Work straight until piece meas from 1st row of armhole shaping 7” [7 ½” – 8”].

Bind off [for shoulder} 36 [36 – 41] sts.

Bind off next 28 sts for back of neck.

Bind off for other shoulder rem 36 [36 – 41] sts.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Attach yarn at armhole edge & work to correspond with left front.

SLEEVES: 
Starting at bottom, cast on 76 [76 -88] sts.

1ST ROW:  [K2, work narrow stripe over next 4 sts] once [once – twice].

Then [k 2, p 6, k 2, work wide stripe over next 8 sts] 3 times; k 2, p 6, k 2.

Then [work narrow stripe over next 4 sts, k 2] once [once – twice].

2ND ROW:  [P2, work narrow stripe over next 4 sts [ once [once – twice] 

[p2, k 6, p 2, work wide stripe over next 8 sts] 3 times; p 2, k 6, p 2.

Then [work narrow stripe over next 4 sts, p 2] once [once – twice].

3RD ROW:  Same as 1st row.

4TH ROW:  Work as for 2nd row over 1st 8 [8 – 14] sts.

Then cable over next 6 sts, work in patt over next 12 sts, cable over next 6 sts & cont in patt making cable over each group of k 6 sts across [4 cables].

Rep these 4 rows until piece meas 3”.

NEXT ROW:  With RIGHT SIDE facing cast on 2 sts, finish row.

Work 1” straight.

NEXT ROW:  With WRONG SIDE facing, cast on 2 sts, finish row.

Cont thus casting on 2 sts at alternate sides on 1 row every inch thereafter, working cast-on sts in patt of narrow stripe alternated with p2 until there are on needle 95 [100 – 104] sts.

Work straight until piece meas 17” [17 ½” – 18”].

To shape top, bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of each row until there rem 72 [76 – 80] sts.

Work straight until piece meas from 1st row of top shaping 5” [5 ½” – 6”].

Bind off at beg of next 4 rows 10 [11 – 12] sts.

Bind off rem 32 sts.

FINISHING:
Block to measurements given.

Sew shoulder & sleeve seams.

Work 1 row sc along right front edge, around neck & down left front.

Sew in sleeves.

Vintage 1938 Knit Bolero with Epaulet Design #970

This modern bolero in attractive basket weave stitch works up quickly in bulky yarn.  The novel design on the bodice & Epaulets topping the short sleeves is sure to please.

SIZE:  16

MATERIALS:
Bernat’s Woolydown, #5263, 7 skeins
Wooden Knitting Needles #8 mm

GAUGE:
6 ½ sts = 2”
5 rows =  1” [basket st]

NOTE:  No measurements other than gauge where given with original vintage pattern.

BASKET STITCH: 
K 1, put yarn in front of work. Sl 1 as if to p, put yarn in back of work.  Rep across row.  

P back.

BACK: 
Cast on 56 sts.

Work border of k every row for 3 ridges.

Change to patt st & work to 7”.

Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows & dec 1 st at beg of next 10 rows.

At 9” from beg on k side, work 1 p row every 6th row to top.  This forms yoke effect.

At 14” bind off 7 sts at beg of next 4 rows.

Bind off rem sts.

FRONT: 
Cast on 23 sts.

K 1 row, inc at end.

K 1 row.

K 1 row, inc at end.

K 1 row.

Change to basket st & inc 1 st at end.  P back

1ST ROW:  Basket st 26.

2ND & ALL EVEN ROWS:  P.

3RD ROW:  Basket st 21, p 5.

5TH ROW: Same as 1st row.

9TH ROW:  Basket st 20, p 6.

Cont in this manner, working 1 more p st & 1 less basket st every 6th row until p sts gradually appear across entire row near shoulder.

Cont line of p sts all across front to shoulder at given intervals.
In meantime, at 6” bind off 6 sts at beg of k row, then dec 1 st at armhole edge every 3rd row until 16 sts rem.

Work to match back.

Bind off 8 sts at beg of next 2 k rows.

Work other front to correspond.

SLEEVE: 
Beg at top, cast on 9 sts.

K 1 row.

P 1 row.

K 1 row.

P 1 row.

P 1 row, casting on 6 sts at end.

Rep last row [21 sts].

Work basket st with line of p sts appearing on right side every 6th row, as on front & back yoke.

At every rep of this line of p sts, work 1 less p st at each end, & work these sts in basket st at same time.

Inc 1 st each end of work every k row 11 times [43 sts].

When sleeve meas 7” from beg, cast on 3 sts at beg next 2 rows.

Work 1”.

Then dec 1 st each side every k row 9 times.

At 4 ½” below armhole, k 10, k 2 tog 5 times, k 11, k 4 rows & bind off loosely.

FINISHING:
Sew darts at top of sleeve.
Seam all parts tog.
With crochet hk & yarn carried on under side of work, pull up lp to right side.
Using long lp, sl st along edge of p st lines, outline patt trim on front & on sleeves.
Work 1 row sc around front & neck.

SIZES:  34 - 36

MATERIALS: 
J & P Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 5 balls
#4 [3 ½ mm] Knitting needles and #1 [2 ¼ mm] Knitting needles
#4 Steel Crochet hook

GAUGE: 
8 sts [2 patterns] = 1 inch;
6 rows = 1 inch

BACK: 
With #4 needles, cast on 138 sts. 

Change to steel needles and work in garter st for 7 ridges. 

Change to #4 needles and work in pattern as follows:

1st row:  K 1, * k 3 tog, k 3 in next st [to k 3 in a st, k1 as usual but do not remove loop from left needle, k again in same st, inserting needle through back loop, k again in same st, inserting needle through front loop].  Repeat from *, ending with k 1.

2nd row:  P across.

3rd row:  K 1, * k 3 sts in 1, k 3 tog; repeat from * ending with k 1.

4th row:  P across. 

Work in pattern for 14 ins, then change to #1 needles and work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 22 rows. 

Change to #4 needles and work in pattern for 5 ¼ ins, ready to work 3rd row of pattern. 

Bind off 5 sts, k 3 tog, pattern across. 

On purl row, bind off 5 sts, p across.

1st dec row:  K 2 sts, k 3 tog, pattern across, ending with k 2 tog twice.

2nd dec row:  P 2 tog twice, p across, ending p 2 tog once.

3rd dec row:  K 1, k 3 in 1, pattern across, ending with k 3 tog.

4th dec row:  P across.

5th dec row:  K 2 tog twice, k 3 sts in 1, pattern across, ending k 3 tog, k 1, pass the last sts over the next-to-last st.

6th dec row:  P across. 

Repeat these 6 decrease rows until there are 73 sts on needle. 

Change to #1 needles, k 7 ridges in garter st, dec 1 st at beg and end of next and every 3rd row, then bind off.

FRONT: 
Same as Back.

SLEEVE: 
With #4 needles, cast on 98 sts. 

Change to #1 needles and work 7 ridges in garter st.

With #4 needles, work in pattern for 10 rows, ready to work 3rd row of pattern. 

Bind off for armholes 5 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows; and work the dec rows same as in back until there are 30 sts on needle. 

Change to #1 needles and in the 1st row, k tog every 3rd and 4th sts. 

Work in garter st for 7 ridges, making a decrease at beg and end of every 3rd row.  Bind off. 

Make another sleeve to correspond.

FINISHING: 
When joining sleeves to body of tunic, put the narrow side of sleeve on the wider side of armhole to counteract the tendency of the lace stitch to make work wider on one side than the other. 

Finish around neck with 1 row of sc in every st, worked tightly.

Vintage 1935 Spectator Two-Piece Knit Suit #177

SIZE:  34 - 36

MATERIALS: 
Clark’s ONT Knitting & Crochet Cotton, 16 balls
Pair #9 [5 ¼ mm] Knitting needles
#1 Steel Crochet hook
1 Buckle for Belt
8 Large buttons

GAUGE: 
5 sts = 1 in;
6 rows = 1 in

PATTERN: 
Stockinette stitch [ knit 1 row, purl 1 row] is used throughout.

BACK OF BLOUSE: 
With thread double, cast on 82 sts. 

Work in Stockinette for 1 ½ ins, then dec 1 st at each end. 

[To dec a st, k 2 tog.  Always dec the 2nd and 3rd sts from the edge to make an even edge]. 

Continue for 2 more ins and dec 1 st at each end. 

Work for 1 in and dec as before. 

Work another in and on the next row, k 10 sts, dec 1 st, k 5 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 17 sts from end and dec 1 st, k 5 sts, dec 1 st, k 10. 

Work evenly for 1 ½ ins and dec 1 st at each end. 

[To inc, knit 1 st but do not slip st off the left needle, then knit another st through the back of the same st and slip off]. 

Work for 1 in and on next row, k 10 sts, inc 1 st, k 5 sts, inc 1 st, k across to within 15 sts, from end and inc 1 st, k 5 sts, inc 1 st, k 10. 

Work evenly for 1 in, then inc 1 st at each end every in for 5 times. 

Continue for ½ in and inc 1 st at each end. 

Work ½ in evenly. 

Piece should now measure 14 ins. 

Bind off 4 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows to start shaping armhole. 

Work 1 row evenly, then dec 1 st at each end for 1 row. 

Work 2 ½ ins evenly and bind off.

RIGHT FRONT: 
Cast on 37 sts and work in stockinette, inc 1 st at end of every purl row until there are 42 sts on needle. 

This gives a curve to the front. 

Work underarm side the same as for the back, making the same decs to shape waistline and the same increases to shape underarm seam. 

When piece measures 9 ½ ins make a buttonhole as follows:  K 3 from front edge, bind off 4 sts, and on next row cast on 4 sts to replace the 4 sts bound off. 

*  Continue for 3 ins and make another buttonhole.  Repeat from * once more.  [3 buttonholes].

LEFT FRONT
Made same as right front, omitting buttonholes. 

To make stockinette on right side, work the curve at the front on every knit row instead of every purl row.

SLEEVES AND YOKE: 
[Made in one piece].  Work starts at wrist of right sleeve. 

Cast on 40 sts and work evenly for 7 rows. 

Then make a buttonhole at beg of 8th row, same as for right front. 

From here on, inc 1 st every 4th row, alternating incs at beg and end of rows to make an even number of incs on both sides. 

When piece measures 18 ½ ins, bind off 4 sts on same side as buttonhole, and 6 sts on the other side.

Then dec 1 st at beg of each of next 5 rows. 

Bind off 10 sts at beg of each of next 2 rows. 

Then on side opposite the buttonhole, cast on 30 sts. 

Work straight for 6 rows [there should be 60 sts across]. 

On next row, make a buttonhole at side where 30 sts were cast on. 

Work 6 more rows straight. 

Then bind off 10 sts at same side as 2nd buttonhole. 

Dec 1 st on the same side as last buttonhole on each row for the next 22 rows until there are 28 sts. 

Work straight for 6 rows.  This completes a half of the piece. 

Finish other half to correspond, omitting the buttonhole on the yoke. 

BELT: 
Cast on 8 sts and work straight for desired length, then dec 1 st at each end until all sts are worked off. 

Make another piece of identical shape and to join the two together, slip st all around the edges of both pieces.

COLLAR
Cast on 3 sts. 

Inc 1 st at beg of every row until there are 16 sts on needle. 

Then work 88 rows straight and shape other point to correspond. 

Make another piece of same shape, and join the two together as done for belt.

CUFFS: 
Cast on 3 sts, inc 1 st at beg of every row until there are 10 sts on needle. 

Work straight 40 rows and shape other end to correspond. 

Make another piece, and join both together as for belt.  this completes one cuff. 

Make another cuff in the same way.

TOP POCKET: 
Cast on 12 sts. 

Inc 1 st at beg of 2nd and 4th rows, then work 8 more rows straight. 

On the 13th row make a buttonhole 2 sts in from straight side [which is top of pocket]. 

Shape other side to correspond.

LOWER POCKET: 
Cast on 17 sts and work same as smaller pocket, with an inc at the beg of the 2nd, 4th and 6th rows. 

Make the buttonhole on the 18th row. 

With the crochet hook, make a row of slip st around pockets to prevent curling. 

Sew top pocket to upper left front and lower pocket to lower right, as in illustration.

Sew sleeve seams, leaving 2 ins open at the wrist. 

Sew up underarm seams and join yoke to rest of jacket. 

Sew collar to yoke, leaving about 2 ins free on each side of yoke. 

Attach center of cuff to center of bottom of sleeve and sew on, leaving about 1 ½ ins free on each side of sleeve. 

The points of the cuffs are tacked at the sleeve seam above the opening at the wrist. 

Sew snap fasteners on to make cuffs fit snugly at wrist. 

Sew on buttons to correspond to buttonholes. 

Make a row of slip st around all edges and buttonholes, to finish off. 

Make ch st loops at side seams of waistline for belt. 

To keep the front edges from curling, apply a half in width strip of grosgrain along both sides and around bottom of jacket.

BACK OF SKIRT
With thread double, cast on 115 sts. 

Work in stockinette 3 ins and dec 1 st at each end. 

*  Work 2 ½ ins and dec 1 st at each end.  Repeat from * 10 more times.  [91 sts on needle]. 

On next row, k 25 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 26 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 5 more rows and on next row dec 1 st at each end. 

Work 6 rows and on next row dec 1 st at each end. 

On next row, k 22 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 23 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 5 more rows and then dec 1 st at each end. 

On next row k 20 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 21 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Work 3 more rows, dec 1 st at each end on next row. 

Then work 4 rows and dec 1 st at each end on next row. 

Then k 17 sts, dec 1 st, k across to within 18 sts from end of row, dec 1 st and finish row. 

Finish with 2 more rows.

FRONT: 
Cast on 130 sts. 

** Work in stockinette for 2 ins, then dec 1 st at each end. 

* Work 1 ½ ins and dec 1 st at each end.  Repeat from * 3 more times. 

Repeat from ** once.  [110 sts on needle]. 

Dec every 1 ½ ins 8 times [94 sts on needle]. 

Dec every 1 ½ ins 8 times [94 sts on needle]. 

From here on, dec every in for 5 times. 

Work 4 rows and dec, 4 more rows and dec, and finish with 3 rows.

Sew skirt seams, leaving opening of 6 ins at right side. 

Pick up sts along opening and work 5 rows for placket. 

Sew skirt to belting and sew hooks on belting and snap fasteners on placket. 

Turn up hem for desired length.
