Free Pattern - Vintage 1946 Baby’s Surplice Cardigan Sweater - Knit

Vintage 1946 Baby’s Surplice Cardigan Sweater 

SIZE:
6 Months

MATERIALS
American Thread Co Dawn Worsted Floss, Art #W16, 1 oz – 3 balls Blue [or any color desired]
Star Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, Art #50, 2 yds each of Pink, Green & Yellow
Pair Bone Knitting Needles #3
2 Buttons
2 Snap Fasteners

BACK:
Cast on 68 sts.

Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2”.

Change to stockinette st [k 1 row, p 1 row] & work even until work meas 6” from beg.

NEXT 8 ROWS:  Cast on 7 sts at beg of each row for sleeves, then work even for 3”, ending with p row.

NEXT ROW:  K 51 sts & place on st holder, bind off next 22 sts for back of neck, k rem 51 sts.

NEXT ROW:  * P to within last 4 sts.  K last 4 sts, turn.

NEXT ROW:  K 4, inc in next st, k to end of row.

Rep from * until sleeve meas 6” at wrist edge, thus making border of 4 sts & inc in 5th st of each K row at neck edge.

Bind off 7 sts at sleeve edge, every other row 4 times & cont inc in every k row at front edge.

Work even at underarm & cont inc at front edge until front meas same as back to ribbing, ending at front edge & having even number of sts on needle.

Cast on 4 sts at front edge [band for fastener] & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 2”, bind off.

Pick up sts from st holder & beg at neck edge k 4, p across rem of row.

NEXT ROW:  K to within last 6 sts at neck edge, inc in next st, k 5.

NEXT ROW:  K 4, p across rem of row.

Rep last 2 rows until sleeve meas 6” at wrist edge.

Bind off sleeve same as other sleeve & work rem of front to correspond with opposite front, always inc in 6th st from front edge in each k row, bind off.

CUFFS:
Pick up 40 sts at lower edge of sleeve & work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 1 ½”, bind off.

FINISHING:
Press work under damp cloth.

Sew underarm & sleeve seams.

Crochet row of sc around back of neck.

Fold right side over left side & crochet 2 lps on right side at waist line for buttonholes.

Sew buttons in position.

Finish left side at waist line with snap fasteners.

Embroider flowers in Pink, using lazy daisy st, having yellow French knot in center of each flower.  Arrange as desired.

Leaves are created in green, using lazy daisy st.

Stems are done in outline st.
